Monotub vs shoeboxes
    #26787224 - 06/27/20 11:55 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I have 9 half pint jars of Amazonian BRF cakes, 6 I am ready to shred into a 5lb Boomr bag (it recommends 1.5lb of spawn so I am going to weigh out the cakes). First success! I calculated a volume of 7.35 qt using wt to volume of manure when this is combined. I have a 64 qt tub and some 15 qt storage containers. I realized the storage containers latch all the way around instead of venting at the ends. The substrate depth will probably only equal about 1.5inches in the tub though. Should I go with the storage containers dubbed or with lids or the monotub? Can you follow the same principals with smaller containers (drill holes, cover with tape and then stuff with polyfill for fruiting) like with monotubs? How many holes and what size?

Personally, I think youre overthinking it. At first I literally just colonized grain jars, mixed it up into shoeboxes, put the top on till the mushrooms grew too high. Harvested. Granted thats with the same
Shoeboxes that mushboy uses in his tek but I think they’re available everywhere.

I personally wouldnt get too involved. I read soo much when I first started. Keep it simple.

9 half pints equals 2 qt of spawn, with an extra 1/4 qt. That's pretty low for making a monotub unless it's going to be real thin or have a low spawn ratio. I'd probably do 2 shoe boxes with a 1:1.5 or 1:2 ratio (spawn to bulk)

Do you think I can use the 15qt containers I have if I drill holes at the ends at the tops and stuff with polyfill since they don't have the ventilation of the shoeboxes? That way I could do a little thicker substrate layer than a 6qt shoebox. I have also had problems with aphid flies in the past so I want to avoid having open shoeboxes later. I do have those sticky aphid traps.

Curious, why do you want a thicker sub layer?

More stable/hold more water? How thick are you supposed to make the layer in the shoebox? First time doing this and trying to follow instructions but it's hard to piece things together especially when trying to use the Boomer Bag which is an odd volume.

Ugh I wish I could help you use a boomer bag but honestly never heard of it. Check out mushboys shoebox tek, its widely used and simple. I use it and grow a ton of mushrooms, and Im lazy.

Most shoeboxes have a line about 3 inches up where the box widens. That's a good depth, or just go 3-3.5inches.

All of them would be a good amount of spawn for one 15qt tub. Just add coir until it’s deep enough. If the lid has a rubber seal that makes it airtight I would just flip it upside down.

I’m not a fan of dub tubs, if I want a small size tub make a mini mono. Personally I find dub tubs to be finicky and a pain in the ass for the most part. If I lived in a more humid location maybe I would like them more.
