Segmented monotub?
    #26788973 - 06/28/20 06:23 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I have recently started doing monotubs. And both monos got contaminated (trich in one and bacteria in the other). Both seem to have started from one spot. I seldom got this problem with trays in a SGFC before. Maybe there was one bad grain in one bad jar or something. As I was looking at my compromised tub I was thinking how nice would have been to have some separators in the tub. So one contamination would not spread to other parts of the tub. Investing so many jars and so much coco coir and have it ruined by one small grain/jar really hurts. It even made me anxious to try monotubing again.

And then it hit me: individual tray casings occupying the whole space in the monotub, with little or no separation between them, is like the same thing, but even better. If one gets contaminated I can easily remove it and leave the rest. If two contaminates I can move the healthy ones to a SGFC and finish there (so not to have humidity problems).  Has anybody tried this? What would be the shortfalls?

PS. I realize that improving my sterile technique would be a better use for my energy. And that for many with almost flawless abilities this would be too much of a pain in the ass and useless endeavor. But for the amateurs like me who live in a not so clean house and don't have a laminar flow hood and great experience, maybe this could be an option.

It's called a dub tub. Research shoeboxes

Are you working with agar to get a clean culture to inoculate with?

If you aren't working with agar, that is the most likely the cause and solution to your problem. And if you are, then you need to review your sterile technique.

When a tub contaminates before or during the first flush it is just about always contaminated spawn. Unless you get lucky, it can be very difficult to catch mold or bacteria in spawn. The green mold Trich doesn't turn green until it sporulates. Otherwise it's bright white, sometimes powdery or crystalline looking.

There’s a method of this for king oyster that works really well, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with cubes too. The problem is that once you see the contam it’s already in the casing which means it could spread.

The thing I saw they put six bags packed into a tub and then cased them so it was all one surface. Idk if you’re talking about that or just putting a few tubs into a mono.

I've seen that for cubes too, you need to pay for more bags but it definitely maximizes your space compared to dub tubbing shoeboxes.
