Do you wash wild mushrooms before drying them?

If yes, did it affect potency?
I ate 0.8g of some really clean, cracker dry subs (stored with lots of silica gel) but they weren't as strong as I've expected.

Don't wash your shrooms. It does in fact lower potency. Psilocybin is water soluble

The psilocybin is trapped in the cells of the mushroom. Washing fresh shrooms just makes the mushroom clean, does not effect potency. Otherwise when it rained all the alkaloids would wash away. Nature is smarter than that.
Wild mushrooms do not have a consistent potency. One mushroom can have three times less or more psilocybin than the next one.
I've also had highly variable results with wild subs too. From being completely blown out of the water on 1.5g to only a feeling a slight elevation of mood.

I knew they are. Just never imagined that a quick rinse would make that much of a difference.

I would ever only remove obvious dirt by brushing, not washing.
But check me out, I never NEED to wash wild mushrooms for the following reasons:
- I take them fresh, and in a tea. Liberty caps tend to be full of maggots that only show themselves when making the tea (they float to the top), or when drying. See below.
- If I have too many and do need to dry some, I dry them initially overnight on cardboard - by morning, all the maggots will have crawled out and died.
- I always make tea and strain out the mushrooms before drinking, so it doesn’t really matter if I dried them with a little dirt.
Finally, I second Northerner; Nature is cleverer than you sometimes think!
Take care all DJ Ed

Exactly! Dry clean only with a towel or dry rag!

Unless you break down the mushroom cells by either freezing, boiling, cooking or digesting them, (or something like that) they don't give up their alkaloids so easily.
Even when foraging you can taste mushrooms to check if they are poisonous lookalikes. As long as you spit at all out you are safe.

Wash them all you want, cold water does nada to psilocybin, otherwise I wouldn't boil em to make tea.

That's another one. Some say heat is detrimental to psilocybin, never use water just off the boil. Then there are many more like you who boil, stew and bake their mushrooms. Anybody here actually did a side by side test?

The melting point of psilocybin ~220c. Boiling water can never get hot enough to damage it, not even in a pressure cooker.

Re. a side by side test - never deliberately but since I either eat them (fresh) or make tea from them (fresh) there never was any difference in the effects that I could tell either way. But tea is a lot more easy to consume.

Washing your mushrooms in water does not lower the potency, who ever rekons that is just following along a wives tale that has not been proven yet. I wash my mushrooms in water every season and people rate the potency as "Rocket fuel". You do realize they are growing outside with the rain forcing them to fruit? right? That is like saying they will be low potency for ever since they are outside in the pouring rain.....
