Suspicious color
    #26786582 - 06/27/20 07:37 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys,

I'd like some help regarding blue/green patch on some BRF cakes.
The cakes were dunked, rolled and placed into SGFC with no prior signs of discoloration.

4 days in, and these little blue-green patches start appearing on two cakes.
They were handled a little roughly during dunking and rolling, but showed no signs of abuse for several days.

The blue patch seem to have intensified, possibly even grown a little (It's been about 7 days since their appearance). It was probed with a sterilized Q-tip, but no coloring was transferred.
I'm guessing that's a good sign.

Is the fact that the blue is spreading an indication of contams, or just long-term reaction to stress (possibly still from the dunk)?

As you can see, there is a visible increase from the first to the second pic.

Thanks

It's penicillium or another green mold get it away from your grow NOW it is sporulating. Cover it with a bag before moving and remove it from your house.

I'm curious why you guys think it's mold?
IMO it looks like bruising.

Mainly experience, you really get to know the look when you fuck up as bad as I have for as long as I have brother.

But for one thing if it was bruising in those areas it would be from dry conditions and the other cakes would be experiencing it.

You can sort of see how it fades from greenish blue to white on its edges, this is telltale of penicillium and other green molds too.

Right on. Thanks for the insight!

Haha my first attempt at agar had a 0% success rate. Made me realize the importance of clean practices and doing things right the first time.

All things considered, it's a pretty cheap life lesson.

Can you get a clearer close up of that coloring? It looks like bruising to me but when I zoom in it's too blurry to tell

OK here are two closer pics, first is with flash.

The blue spots seem to have gone away by now, but the areas are now off-white to grey (doesn't look like the pristine white of the other cakes).

The grey is quite visible on the second pic.

My question is: Is it ok to still eat the fruits from this cake. If not, is it ok to eat the ones from the same fruiting chamber, or are all the cakes possibly contaminated now? It's been well over a week now since the blue appeared.

Here is a pic of a shroom harvested from a different SGFC, but which was in the same room:

The cap has some very dark blue spots, much darker than the bruised spots at the base from harvesting. Also the cap wasn't touched, making me wonder where the color is from.

Anyways, thanks a lot for the help.

P.S. I know the fuzzy areas are an indication of excessive RH, trying to reduce it right now.

Wow that looks so much different than your other picture.  What the hell did you take that first pic with a camera from a alternate dimension or something? That is just bruising. Imma have to be more careful before I tell someone to throw something out and ask for some more pics my bad friend. That little bit of color on the cap is looking like some minor bacterial blotch which you get from the mushrooms being too wet for too long. IE too much misting or not quite enough FAE. I can see the minor fuzzy stems are an indication of a little bit not enough FAE.

Oh that's a huge relief, I was really bummed out for a minute there...
I'll just cut away the bacterial blotch and it should be all good.

Thanks again guys for the advice, time to celebrate!:sun:

The bacteria isn't normally a big deal to eat for most people but a heated 150f+ dehydrator run will neutralize any nasties.

If a mold takes more than 7 days to eat a small brf cake then it’s likely not mold. Most molds of concern will destroy the whole substrate in a few days.
