Getting plenty of side pins but none on surface

Update from a few days ago, I have alot of healthy pins coming in on the sides, but still only the one on the surface. The surface on looks healthy but there is slight discoloration on the substrate. I think its mycelium metabolites but I am not sure. Should I maybe give it a hydrogen peroxide misting? Following Bod's list.

I’m a newbie myself but from what I’ve learned, Pins will form wherever there is a suitable climate. As your sub shrinks it creates a microclimate on the sides hence the pins. Next time you could line the bottom and sides so that it sticks to the sub as it shrinks.

My limited experience is that when using a top layer sidepins will come sooner than on the top when using no liner, even when keeping the top moist.

Like he said above, the pins are coming up on the sides because they prefer the microclimate there. They are getting something there they aren't getting on top.
The surface does not look healthy. It looks very dry. When a substrate surface gets real dry it can get this matted, yellowy look like that, kinda rubbery.
When a tub is dialed in correctly there should be a constant layer of tiny water droplets on the substrate surface. The constant evaporating of these droplets is a major pinning trigger. Pools of water means it needs more FAE, dry spots means you should cut back FAE some and give it a misting.
Is this an unmodified tub? Have you been misting?
That patch of white at the bottom left corner (2nd pic) worries me. Keep an eye on it, could be Trich starting - hard to tell

It's an unmodified tub, I've been misting but I have been having trouble keeping it dry. I don't think there is mold forming it passed the q test and there are no smells coming off of the tub. Is there anyway to bring the surface back?

Ok so I've been doing some thinking and measurements. My area gets super hot and dry so I have set up a humidifier near my tubs to help keep humidity and surface moisture at good levels. I did not level my first tub as well as a should have hence the side pinning. The tubs I have coming up behind it seem to be colonizing much more evenly and the moisture content seems to be staying more even.

You wouldn't get any smells coming off the tub most likely. I'm not sure what a Q test is. Trich starts off in bright white patches, sometimes crystalline looking other times powdery. It turns green when it sporulates.
It might not be mold, just keep an eye on that spot

The humidifier won't do much for surface moisture. It's not how the tub was leveled causing side pinning either. Especially with the surface looking the way it does.
Restrict FAE a little and increase your misting, as soon as the water droplets on the surface dry up most again.
It takes time to learn how to dial in tubs. It's a balancing act. You want the maximum FAE you can allow without starting to dry things out.

If you’re having trouble keeping it dry then don’t mist.
Really you shouldn’t need to mist more than a couple times, and only when it needs it. A lot of people think they need to mist on a schedule for some reason.
Try to mist up high so it falls down to the surface and only enough to keep beads of water.

Is it ok if I pm you in a bit I could use some overall advice about whole monotub thing. Everything else(agar, grain jars) have been going great, but I would like more advice on these tubs and I don't want to keep spaming the board with posts.
