Growing Morels, FOR REAL
    #26785386 - 06/26/20 06:08 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all,
Yes, I know all the lore about growing morels but I thought this was interesting:

I was recently listening to the MeatEater podcast by Steve Rinella. They had an episode on morel foraging. A mycologist named Ronald Ower filed a patent in 1982 after figuring out how to grow morels. He was murdered a few months before the patent was finalized.

Since then, many have tried to grow morels and failed. Now, a man named Josh Osborn has been successfully growing morels in Iowa. The hosts of MeatEater called him up. He didn't divulge all the details but stated that you grow the mycelium on agar, transfer it to a bag, let the bag colonize, and then bury the bag contents in the fall. Add in some shade and water and you have yourself some morels.

Here's a couple links:
This one shows his morel farm https://www.kcrg.com/content/news/While-many-hunt-one-Eastern-Iowa-man-farms-his-own-morel-mushrooms-570320421.html

I live in an area where morels grow naturally. I'll give it a go in the fall. I do appreciate that morels must be foraged but growing them could be fun too.

I wonder if you need to pasteurize the area you intend to bury the morel spawn in... anyone know? I'd assume so. I live right on the edge of a forest that has a lot of recently downed trees, I'd love to get some spawn ready for the fall and give these babies a shot!

I actually just foraged many morels today and have a few I'd like to use for their spores.
Pasteurize outdoor substrate?
You may choose only one

morels are currently produced as below:

spawn is mixed into nutrient poor soil.
booster bags are placed onto the soil, allowing the mycelium to grow into the bags, getting nutrients and storing them in microsclerotia.
booster bags are removed
then the morels fruit when conditions are right.

that's how they do it in France at the moment.
