new Casing, Mycelium stopped growing
    #2670775 - 05/12/04 08:07 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi All, I'm sure the answer to this question is out there, but I couldn't find it and maybe one of you could point me to it.

This is the first time i'm trying a casing method. I'm using 50% vermiculite and 50% peat moss with just a little bit of perlite. no lime was added because I couldn't find any in all of SF. (the closest I got was calcium Carbonate pills at the health food store, very expensive and time consuming to crush all those pills)

The casing was done in a 4x4x4" disposable tupperware container. I used 1/2" bottom casing, 2-3" colonized cooked brown rice substrate, and 1/2-1" top.

Then with the lid on, it went back into the incubation chamber at 86 degrees.

It's been there for 5 days. No change in the mycelium.

the sides of the containers are misty with condensation. no puddles or large droplets. and the containers are buldging a bit from the gas buildup.

What is going on????? Why has the mycelium not recouped itself and growing into the casing?

Thank you gurus of the fungi

id exchange the air and wait. mycelium is probably networking slowy because of lack of oxygen.

Ok do you have any holes in the top so they can get air exchange? The mycelium needs a little bit of o2 to continue to grow.

2) Which tek are you following? Sounds like you are doing the Rych Hawks older mix but you are making it much thicker than that tek calls for. It will probably finish but you have a greater chance of contams, etc, with the thicker casing.

3) What are your temps? Should be like 75+ less than 90 for that phase of growth.

4) and what was the wetness of your case? Do you think you made it too wet, too dry, anything like that?

Cool, I'll fan it and wait longer.

how often should I fan it? once a day?

also, should I be worried about contamination at this point?

yes the verm will grow anything under the sun wet airy conditions are suited for lots of funky stuff  :nutkick:  keeping it out the light when incubating is a good way to help prevent contams

Okay guys,

Thanks for the help,

Now I've done the whole exchange air thing and I smelled some funky odors from the casings. I've also noticed that the humidity is raising in the casings. The droplets on the sides of the containers are getting larger.

The odors are worrying me But I don't see any visual signs of contams.

are the casings suppose to give off scents?
