You should shoot the cop neighbor in the eyes with rubber bullets. Problem solved. Yeah you’ll have new problems, but him seeing your poppies won’t be one of them.

I read somewhere that if you cut them at the base of the pod they'll grow more flowers and pods. Also read that the stems contain alkaloids lower than the pods but still usable. Is this true?

A nice looking garden bed

I do have a question. First, these are destined for tea, scoring would not be ideal due to location. I am waiting for the crowns to point upwards and the "seed vents" (little holes at base of crown) to form before picking, right? Trying to aim for peak potency. Also, I have read the cutting the top 7 inch is best and doing so would allow for the plant to produce more pods, is this true?

I am half tempted to brew all of them at once and then reduce liquid till I get a goop, then dry that. Sort of leery about it though as the alkaloids are so temp sensitive meaning it would take forever to reduce liquid.

They are somniferums, Nowheremans.
The varietys with very many petals are a popular garden variety because of their beauty.
They still are potent though.

If you want opium you need to have the papaver somniferum variety.
The other varietys are not usable.
Regarding bugs and mites i wouldnt worry with poppys.
As they grow outside there are other predators that take care of the problem, and they cant really do much damage unless you have an unnatural large army of them.
Snails on the other hand is really damaging, especially when they are small.
They can eat all seedlings quickly and needs to be dealt with as soon as you see them.

As when to score the pods there are some signs you want to look for.
1. the crown on top should start to point upwards.
2. the pod should start to look lite pale.
3. There is a ring on the stem just under the pod. This ring get darker when the pod begins to be ready.
I have a pic somewhere, here:

Here you see the crown pointing upwards, this one i grew 2018

This Jumbo Turkish Oval variety got huge pods

This year i have grown mostly Persian white poppys and a few Jumbo Turkish ovals.
The Persian whites are fast and can be grown 2 times a season if you live in a favorable place for growing poppys.
When the pods have started to loose their petals you dont want much rain.
Hot and dry is good, rain makes them less potent.
The pods more than doubble in size from when they first loose their petals.

Been harvesting seeds. Pods still left on the vine are turning brown and crunchy. Excessive rainfall/humidity early on caused almost all of my turkish pods to rot. Afghans have faired much better.

Thanks for all that info Mateo much appreciated.

Picked a few pods and I’ll dry up and blitz to a powder. Wish I could’ve left them to mature more but I know they’re in spot which will be pulled out in the next few days.

Hopefully they’ll be some potency there. We’ll see

Very nice plants fellas :awesomenod:

I've still got some somniferum stragglers around, but all my non opium varieties are pushing out massive blooms left and right, and show no signs of stopping!

I'm going to devote more time to mine next year, and throw in some more variety!

Oh, how I can't wait until next season :excited:

Poppies are very beautiful and there are so many varietys with differt looks and colors.
Sad that the petals fall off so quickly but the pods themselves are quite beautiful i think.
Where i live one sometimes can buy the big pods with stalks, freshly harvested.
They use them in flower arrangements.
But they are only available at harvest time and are too expensive to buy if one wants to make some kind of extraction.

Mix some non somniferum varieties in with your somniferums, their blooms last for several days, and are much more striking
