Haven't had best experiences with liquor thus far. Most likely as a result of only having consumed the bottom of bottom shelf liqs. Looking to purchase my first bottle and interested to hear some good options. Please be friendly to my wallet.

This is my absolute fave but will set you back $40 - $50.

Most of the time, I cannot afford that and instead purchase this whiskey @ $25

Larceny is good on a budget. No complaints at all.
Do you have a Walgreens Liquor store in your area? Sometimes, they have awesome deals on whiskey.
For now, I like Maker's Mark when it's on sale, Bulleit Bourbon, or Knob Creek Small Batch. If you've got some cash, I'd recommend Jack Daniels Single Barrel.
Got me some corn whiskey from St. Pete Florida the other day from Target Liquors. Man, I just about cried when I saw that Target had put in a liquor store.

It's not bad, but it's kinda sweet for my tastes. The bottle is cool though. https://oldstpetecraftspirits.com/our-spirit/

Jameson straight. Single malt scotch if I can afford it.

Laphroaig 10 other Islay scotches too, but for price/peat flavor hard to beat the Laphroaig 10 year old

Most whiskey is way too sweet. If I had to drink American whiskey I'd go for knob creek or makers mark. I know there are better ones but I haven't tried them, because I don't really like whiskey and the price only goes up from there.
I can do Jameson. Jameson on rocks is my go-to for a shitty dive bar that doesn't have anything worth ordering. Its not sugary and it tastes good when the ice melts. You usually get a pretty healthy pour for 4-5 bucks or whatever too because there's nothing else in the glass, it looks terrible if it's mostly empty. But Jameson isn't what people are talking about when they say whiskey.
I once drank 3/4 a 750ml of Jameson on acid and felt sober as can be I can really put the stuff down when I'm tripping
My favorite liquor is tequila. Hornitos or higher. I prefer the lighter stuff and the clear stuff over the super dark stuff generally. Make sure you only buy 100% agave tequila. Stay away from Jose Cuervo, unless its the pricier Tradicional, that stuff is pretty good. You can find some decent 100% agave tequila at pretty reasonable prices if you look around. IMO a $15 bottle of hornitos is way better than any $15 bottle of whiskey I've tried.

And you said you are used to bottom shelf liquor?
Thats because you probably drank nasty Jose Cuervo grain alcohol bro lol. Thinking about drinking that makes me want to puke too.
Try 100% agave tequila. It's the cleanest thing. Hornitos is cheap and pretty damn good.

Tried Monte Alban Mezcal few years back, even ate the little maggot thing. But tbh I don't really remember if I liked that one or not. Had too much that night. Perhaps I'll revisit the world of tequila and give it a fair shake.

For sure. Mescal is different. Tequila is much cleaner.

I'm not much of a whiskey drinker, mostly beer. I have to be pretty drunk as it is to want to fuck with the stuff
I had a buddy buy a chilled double shot of jameson at the bar the other night that went down quite smooth.
Last time I drank whiskey heavy another friend of mine pulled out a bottle of Texas Crown that wasn't completely repulsive, and polished off the night pretty well.
