My comp is fucked
    #2678188 - 05/14/04 03:40 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

My comp was running REALLY slow so I restarted it. Now all it does is say 'last attempt to restart failed' gives me choices to either 'restart in safe mode' 'restart in safe mode for networking' 'restart in safe mode with prompts' 'restart last known working point' and 'restart windows normally' and NO MATTER which one I choose it will just sit there and say windows XP for a while then shut off then restart and go in this circle.

I called a comp repair place and explained what was wrong, they said this happens a lot with XP and they know how to fix it and it'll cost $45/hr... and will take about an hour and half to fix. AND I wouldn't get my comp back till tues or wednesday because there's 46 comps in front of me. SO before I drop $70 and go without a comp for 5 days, does someone know how to fix this?

my friend says it dounds like sasser... but I downloaded the sasser fix.

PS I'm posting from my parent's comp my comp wont even load dos.

One just has to reinstall windows.Thats what they're going to do at the shop.Pop the win XP CD in and do a fresh install(IE quickformat the drive using the win XP cd when it gets to that point)

You may not have to do a clean install. First try to repair the install from the cd... that should work. If not, resort to clean install. *WARNING* the last option WILL delete everything

Happened to me once. For some reason my usb drive would cause this when plugged in, yet the computer started normally when the drive was unplugged. Days later the usb drive failed.

Frirst thing to try is boot fromt he cdrom, hit R for recovery, login to the recovery console and run 'chkdsk /p'. I have seen this bring many a machine back from the grave. I have also seen it do nothing for a lot of machines, but it is where I usually start.

When you go into safe mode, does it load up the drivers then reboot on mup.sys? that's what my computer is doing.. it's happening on 4 motherboards, 3 processors, 3 hard drives 4 power supplies, and 7 sticks of ram all interchanged. I have no idea what the problem is.

YES! that mup file fucks up everything!

I wonder though... would my parent's XP recovery disk work in my comp?? They're both compaqs... not the EXACT models. They got one... why didn't I get one? I should make the people who screwed me over and sold me a comp with no recovery disk pay for the comp place to fix it :finger:

*shakes fist at mup file*

It's not actually mup.sys, mup.sys is just the last file loaded before it does something which isn't displayed in the verbose mode.  It definately looks like it's mup.sys though.

You got a computer with no recovery disk?  You may have bought a hot copy of windows xp... they usually give you the original disk with the computer if it's a legit copy!  Or atleast a copy of the license with product key.

Your parent's recovery disk  probably wont work because recovery disks generally look at the type of computer (reported by the bios) and sometimes wont work in any computer than that model.  But sometimes it's only manufacturer specific.  You could always put the hard drive in yours and your parents computer and try.

What LuvDemShrooms said is interesting, because it seems I had these problems right after plugging in a USB drive into my desktop, but that doesn't explain why it keeps happening in new motherboards.

You may want to run a program to check your RAM, like http://www.memtest86.com/ which boots from a CDROM.

Does anyone have any information regarding this problem?  It's driving me nuts.

Good luck :tongue2:

A few possible fixes if found online:

"Boot off the windows cd, load the recovery console.
Type "disable mup"
Hit Enter
All done, windows works. Mup.sys is the service to connect to Novell servers. %99.99909 of people won't need this."

or

"If you are using a USB 2.0 card remove it and reboot."

or 3rd,

"If your computer is not booting at all, try taking out a PCI card, or moving it around, or changing the graphics card or moving a PCI card to another slot. With me, any hardware change made the computer termorarily boot. As soon as it does boot change the computer type to 'ACPI' in the control panel by going to hardware devices - computer - computer type (Probably standard PC) - update driver. Then chose Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) computer. If it doesn't work - sorry! but it did for me and I've not had any problems for the last month. "

Dunno if this is gona help yall, but its about all i could find on the ned regarding this problem... nothing on support.microsoft.com at ALL... GOOD LUCK! let us know what fixes it (if anything)

When you disable mup.sys, the previous driver freezes it... it's just an illusion that mup.sys is to blame. It loads all of the drivers and displays which driver is loaded, mup.sys is the last one to load, then it does something and at that point freezes. It's not the driver 'mup.sys' that actually freezes the computer, it's something else. It also happens when I try to load Win2000, it reboots during setup.

No USB card, disabled it on bios and it didn't fix.

Switching around the PCI cards helped temporarily but it failed eventually.

StonedShroom-- Try these things though, they didn't work for me but maybe they will work for you

> You got a computer with no recovery disk?

The new HP's don't have recovery disks... instead, you hit F10 when you reboot and it restores to factory defaults (after confirmation). You can burn your own recovery CD's from within the OS if you want a hard copy. The F10 thing just reimages the drive from an image stored in a nonactive partition.
