ID Request - Psilocybe alutacea? NZ * 4
    #26781059 - 06/25/20 03:10 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Location: South Island, New Zealand

Habitat: Growing from horse poo in a grassy paddock. The original patch is on a hill and is mostly shaded and stays quite damp. Tall grasses, moss, bracken and pines are nearby. I found another patch nearby in a damp shaded gully.

Gills: Grey/brown

Stem: Mottled, thin but some what sturdy, height approx 3.00 cm - 10.00 cm

Cap: Brown, conical, approx 1.0 cm -1.5cm diameter. Tacky. A cap suck to paper and I would say it was a separable gelatinous pellicle that I observed. A quite stretchy pellicle.

Spore print color: Purple/brown

Bruising: Bluing seen in the mycelium in the horse poo, in some pins and at the base of stem.

Taste: Fresh normal shroom taste to begin and then slightly sweet with almost an liquorice or aniseed tang.

I've been investigating the mushrooms in this paddock for a few days now and there are piles of horse poo spread over a about 100m sq. At first I thought they were mostly all Deconica coprophila. There are some Protostropharia semiglobata there too. I'll put up more photos later. Thanks for any help.

Looks like it for sure, but that's not cow dung. Are they reported to grow from Horse dung as well?

Yeah, I keep looking, and those are almost certainly Psilocybes of some kind.

Loving the bluing myc. I would say alutacea based on that. Dont think coprophilic mushrooms discriminate between animals.

The different species have somewhat different preferences.

I'm not sure if I remember correctly or not, but I think inski mentioned P. fimetaria, which favours horse dung, was found growing in NZ.
Bagels, you should keep these for further study.

Cool find!

Hey that's interesting Anglerfish. Thanks very much

Keep it humid in a plastic container or something similar, maybe it'll produce more fruits.
Would be interesting to see young specimens and how the veil develops.

Mind you I haven't either. And I'm not 100% about the P. fimetaria find in NZ, I might remember incorrectly. If inski is around he might elaborate.

Ahh, nice one, thanks. That is indeed the thread I was thinking about.
He also says P. alutacea and P. fimetaria needs DNA sequences to be distinguished from one another.

Thanks guys. The collection is here: https://nzfungi2.landcareresearch.co.nz/default.aspx?selected=NameDetails&TabNum=0&NameId=1EA0287C-8C8B-493A-836E-4A3B1E64F625 and it was P. alutacea after all.

With that bruising mycelium and stipe base I would be confident that these are the goods.

That said, if you collected these they ought to display bruise bruising even further after being handled, no?

I'll be keen to see more images and more specimens and more data.

I thought they might of all been frosted away. Habitat - grassy hillside. I lifted the horse poo and turned it over and found the little blue almost pin. Caps are a a bit tacky and not really sticky like the Deconica sp. I find.

@Roger No blue bruising with handling so far.

I tasted one and it was quite nice. Fresh normal shroom taste to begin and then slightly sweet with almost an liquorice or aniseed tang. Then I remembered on the way home that it was growing from horse poo..

Further up the hill and all in close proximity. I was finding it hard to see what I was trying to photograph.

Does anyone here know much about the macroscopic differences between Psilocybe alutacea and Deconica species? Seems both have purple spores, could be a bit of a task to differentiate?

I know next to nothing about Psilocybe alutacea, not my expertise

I think I know how to get them to bruise blue now. Last ones collected today are at the top of the 4th pic. Very wet there today after a couple days of rain. My camera is steaming up.
