Agar is goopy and smells sour. How to fix my mistakes?

1st timer. So to get the last bottle I was definitely drinking. I won't do mushroom work drunk again lol.
So I took 15 grams of agar agar powder and light malt extract and poured into 3 tequila/vodka bottles. (15gr x 3)
I then poured 750ml of boiling water into said bottles. I read somewhere to use hot ass water to disolve the agar? Well my dumbass didnt have time to shake em all fast enough and one kinda solidified, but instantly broke up and dissolved. Next time i will not do all at once and take my time. I thought I was being smooth but it didn't work out lol.

After shaking bottles enough to see no chunks I covered with their caps that have a hole drilled and filter disc inside. Wrapped in foil. Next fuck up. I barely remember how long i pressure cooked for, but i know it was over an hour. I now know thats bad. I didnt know you could over sterilize agar. Next time ill do 15-20 min.

So after i got the agar bottles out of the PC I got my SAB ready. I did the SAB right... To a point. When i pulled the bottles out, they were still hot and had chunks of agar floating around, probably from overcook. I shook each bottle up enough to dissolve the chunks, but I don't think it worked. Either way, that happened AND I didnt wait long enough for my agar to cool. I'll post pics of my plates in a few.

I poured 80 dishes and some turned out great, while a bunch are just fucked. I thought I waited for them to cool long enough, and probably under poured some.

I inoculated 80 dishes with 3 MS syringes. Golden teacher, Koh SSS, and Amazon pes. Wrapped in parafilm. I definitely thought i was doing a good job, and wasnt. I squirted each plate instead of just a drop in the middle. Been incubating in my closet for a week at 80 (got up to 85 one day) and at first only 3 had a green spot after a few days. No MYC at all. Today im noticing cobwebs and no myc, among tons of condensation and more plates with green. I opened one and it smelled sour and the agar was goopy. Im tossing out all 80 plates as they are all fucked.

UNTIL THEN... I have 8 syringes on the way. Gonna start fresh with no alcohol and start over. Not using all 8 syringes. I got 60mm dishes (500case) so I'll just do 50 plates at a time until I get MYC. Also im going to just use a syringe for some rye bags to get some sort of grow started. Im doing 40 dishes in a few days. 10 plates for 4 new strains.

Any tips or anything let me know. Ill clean my act up and i am trying guys! Dont shit on this NOOB too hard lol

What is there to shit on, you messed up, we all mess up, learn from it and don't mess up the next time. Next time you do your agar try dumping dry ingredients in the container and add regular temp water, then pc it, don't shake it or mix it the pc will do that.

Did you take any pics of the 'cobweb'? You might have just had some light tomentose growth that still could of been transfered and cleaned up. I've had plates that look like disasters but one little scrape of myc can save the day.

Am I reading right that you used 15g of agar and LME to 750ml water? Sounds like quite a high mix to me. Some more experienced dudes might want to chime in but I believe a softer agar mix is easier for the spores to work with. And a high nute content means any myc growth will be slow as fuck as it has so much to munch on.


You might do well to just to go back to basics with your next shot. Find a good tek, copy it into a journal for reference and follow it all to the letter.

Just a tip for starting, you don’t need so many germination plates. If I wasn’t sure of my skills I would maybe do 2 or 3 germ plates for each variety in case something doesn’t work out. You really only need one germ plate since you should be transferring away from it once you see clean growth and you can transfer to many other plates from that original. That way you don’t end up with tons of plates you don’t really need and then you end up inoculating with germ plates just to use them up.

I dont wanna be a bummer but I already trashed em all. There was only 1 or 2 that I thought couldve been myc and I know ill get shitted on but I just tossed em all and spent the night cleaning. By Monday ill have brand new dishes and i guess I was just thinking like a newbie. Im not tripping just wanted to share my experience.

I only did so maany to get the ball rolling. Im only gonna do 40 at most this time. 10 of each strain seems reasonable to me.

Yes I read the basic mix was 10gr of agar, 10mg of LME and 500 ml water. A tequila bottle js 750ml
