Outdated Crimes/Laws * 1
    #26780725 - 06/24/20 11:24 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So tonight I've been going through old historical archives looking for interesting things. I came across an 1826 article from Baltimore calling out Connecticut after they fined a circus performer $60. He was found guilty of "rope dancing and of extraordinary feats of agility and dexterity of body".

What other insane crimes have you heard of?

It's illegal to photograph rabbits in Wyoming without a permit from January through April. A game warden needs to accompany you as well on your photo shoot.

In Western Australia it was illegal to possess more than 50kg of potatoes. People have paid serious fines for this stuff.

The law came into effect during the great depression to stop food hoarding. But the Potato Board (yes seriously) refused to give up their right and rule over the owning and selling of spuds after it ended. So then we had potato barons, born into lives of potato based riches... But these guys had serious government power behind them including the right to stop and search and arrest you for having too many potatoes, and they were serious about using these powers.

Finally about 4 or 5 years ago some bloke named Tony refused to pay their stupid fines and decided he was going to sell as many potatoes as he liked whenever he liked. Fuck em. The potato barons hired as many lawyers as they could and it went all the way to the Supreme Court. Surprisingly the judge sided with Tony and the potato barons got stripped of power. Tony was a regular Aussie hero and the barons went home wimpering to their massive farms and mansions.

There's some documented case in 14th century France where they held a trial for and hanged an actual farm pig, public execution style because it killed a kid

In Texas - Up to a felony charge can be levied for promoting the use of, or owning more than six dildos.

I've heard that in some states in the US, the Marijuana plant is illegal and possession is punishable by imprisonment.

HA! A fellow Texan huh? I should have guessed, lol. I think I remember women being pissed that beer was sold on sundays, but no panty hose and various other BS, lol. Also remember when I was of age to go to those sex stores/shops that a dildo shaped like a penis or realistic looking was illegal. Texas is STILL a strange place.

That was another one I just read, and seems to still be a law.

6. It’s illegal to possess realistic dildos.

https://www.salon.com/2012/10/29/ten_worst_sentences_for_marijuana_related_crimes/

I also remember reading a story about a man in prison for seeds only. He was charged for what each seed could possibly produce and he had a bag full of them. Each seed was said to possibly produce 2 lbs or something like that. I can't find it. I think it was in Texas too.

how much is $60 in todays dollars, if the circus had maybe 300 guests and charged maybe 50 cents an entry the whole circus only made $150

Curious how many tax payer dollars were dedicated to this legal discussion. And the outcome.. Like a bunch of lawyers in a room saying "no dude, more than 1 meter of dick is hoarding and/or contraband". Don't hoard the dong.

It is illegal in my state for a woman to drive unless her husband walks in front of the vehicle waving a flag.
