ID request on mario mushroom lookalive
    #26780253 - 06/24/20 07:30 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Cant ID the species alone from searching, a spore print can be shown soon, just layed it out on paper so gotta wait an hour or so. But I thought this lil guy was cool enough to bring home and ask you guys what specie it is, I went mushroom hunting today but no luck because its been way too hot for about a week straight, no rain or anything, I cant find any farms that are just easily accessible to wander upon without getting yelled at by the owner, so I figured a golf course would be the ideal choice given my location; Long Island New York, one day.. its so rare to find mushrooms here, anyways.. Heres some shots of the little guy, like I said it was on a golf course, and it was very fragile the cap fell off the stem the second I pulled it. And well, I just liked the mario mushroom vibe it gave off, being a red top and white bottom, ya know, so yeah, if anyone knows the species that would be cool  Oh, and a very big turtle in some swampy area outside the skirts of the course, another place I checked since like I said there has been no rain, I was hoping a swampy/muddy area might be a good place to look around now.

I am expecting it to be poisonous, thats all I can come up with so far, definitely not psyche :P

Thanks, definitely looks like that after searching what those look like. One of these days I will find a magic mushroom on the ground. I just wish they were common here, and not so rare. Perhaps I will get the best luck after rainfall though and not on consecutive sweaty days :P

No problem man, where bouts do you reside? We can probably point you in the right direction depending on your area. I have never found an active mushroom in my life in my town, until I found some cinctulus growing in one of my flower pots the other day, so I know your pain.

I live on Long Island in New York, the most boring part of new york there can be. I know where to look, well at least I think I do, obviously at the top of the list would be somewhere with cows haha, and then underneath that I figured a golf course would have some good luck, since the grass is meadow like and also golf courses always have piles of woodchips and hay on the out skirts for some reason, I checked all the piles of hay and woodchips and mulch I saw, no luck there, so yeah, a farm, then a golf course are my only 2 ideal mushroom seeking locations given my location, and even given my location, a farm is hard to sneak onto without being chased and threatened by the owner. Trust me, I was even scared to sneak onto the golf course but I was able to walk around the full course without even being talked to once, they just assumed I was a member I guess, and yeah, I walked around the WHOLE course, looking at the ground the whole time, and only saw that one single red shroom, so yeah, no luck, I just have to wait until it rains and shrooms start sproutin out the ground and hopefully one of em is a magic batch. 3 days straight of mushroom hunting in swampy areas, golf course, a huge nature preserve, near ponds and lakes with wildlife, etc, I have only seen 2 mushrooms, so it is definitely just because of the weather I think, because there should be a lot of mushrooms, magic or not, at this time of year, but it hasnt rained in like, 2 damn months, over here.. so yeah.. but I will still keep going every day until I find something, I realize that I will have the most luck if I try going every day (its also good exercise so I dont mind) rather than only every now and then.

I wouldn't waste time on livestock fields, unless you lived in extreme southern Tennessee on down to Florida. you gotta have ovoids where you are, although I think the season is starting to wind down. Here is a list of what can be found in your state. I would look them all up, and learn their habitats.

You have the right ideas though, woods chips and golf courses can be good places to find mushrooms. If you can find some nice patches of deep dark woods, check out old rotting logs for and wood debris for ovoids and gymnopilus

You could also cruise the rich neighborhoods with well manicure lawns and find cinctulus. But, it would be kind of hard to get at them without being noticed.

A few years back, I found a ton of cinctulus on a newly sodded lawn in front of a car dealership. I don't care what people think though, and I went home and got my backpack and loaded up.
You should have seen all the people driving by staring at me, some even slowed down, haha!

Anyway, check out the list, and happy hunting!

Gymnopilus luteofolius
Gymnopilus luteus
Gymnopilus validipes
Panaeolus cinctulus
Panaeolus olivaceus
Pluteus americanus
Pluteus brunneidiscus
Psilocybe caerulipes
Panaeolus fimicola
Pholiotina cyanopus
Pholiotina smithii
Psilocybe liniformans var. americana
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata
Psilocybe semilanceata
Psilocybe silvatica
