Today the ICU at my local hospital is full and now past max capacity.

Trump still won’t wear a mask in front of the cameras to help lead the country to do the right thing by being an example himself.

It's infuriating right?

My grandma was fighting it off in a nursing home across town from one of his maskless mask factory visits when he was there. It just made me so fucking mad. It's so irrational and childish.

I  better check in with some of my family down south and in arizona. The ones in arizona have turned into full qanon truthers and will not be caught dead in a mask, so it's just a matter of time, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they hit up that trump rally.

Wow, I think this is massively under-reported. Some of people never get better. Scary stuff.

California hospitals are filling up with younger covid patients now.

This visualization provides context that underlines the worldwide impact of Covid-19. I must say that I was a bit surprised. Keep in mind that we are still figuratively in the first inning of this

I didn't quote the videos because my phone screen gets messed up when videos get quoted/re-quoted.

I did look through the studies he listed in his references and skim the videos for anything new. The studies are the same ones I talked about in my post or offshoots of them. Unless I missed something, they're mostly preliminary, not peer-reviewed, and overall shaky as hell, which most of them say themselves right in the paper. Others just reference the old BMJ respiratory infection/vit D article, which did not do so well in peer review.

One of the charts in his links from May actually assumes that Sweden and Brazil are doing so well (at that time) because they have such high vitamin D levels... just one example that correlations often don't hold water upon further scrutiny or in this case simply the passage of time.

Getting vitamin D either way is a good thing, and I hope it might help at least a little since it's a pretty easy treatment... I was just interested if there was any new or clinically relevant research.

https://www.factcheck.org/2020/06/does-vitamin-d-protect-against-covid-19/

Quote:

“It is relatively easy to calculate associations, and that is what most of these papers have done,” Penn State’s Ross said. “But associations do not show cause and effect, and in fact, ‘reverse causation’ is not carefully considered.” The disease itself could cause a reduction in a person’s vitamin D levels, she said, noting that there are negative associations of serum vitamin D with diabetes, obesity and other infections. “I place little confidence on any of these studies,” she said.

More credible, Ross said, were two analyses of U.K. biobank data, neither of which support the idea that less vitamin D leads to a higher risk of COVID-19 infection. Given concerns that the disproportionate number of coronavirus infections in blacks and South Asians in the U.K. could be due to lower vitamin D levels in darker-skinned people, the researchers checked to see if there was any connection between a person’s vitamin D levels, which had been measured in participants about a decade ago, and testing positive for COVID-19.

While the published report affirmed that black and South Asian participants were several times more likely to test positive for COVID-19 than whites, there was no association with vitamin D. The authors concluded that vitamin D “is unlikely to be the underlying mechanism for the higher risk observed in black and minority ethnic individuals and vitamin D supplements are unlikely to provide an effective intervention.”

The other analysis, which Lanham-New said has since been submitted to a journal with additional participant data, found no difference in vitamin D status among those who tested positive versus negative for COVID-19. She said additional work was planned once COVID-19 severity and mortality data became available.

Quote:

But experts caution against overinterpreting preliminary correlations or hypothetical mechanisms. As Pennsylvania State University nutrition researcher A. Catharine Ross told us, associations are not the same as cause and effect, and the evidence either for or against vitamin D and COVID-19 is “extremely weak.”

A rapid review from Oxford University’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine found “no clinical evidence” that vitamin D could prevent or treat COVID-19, and another review on the topic published by nearly two dozen nutrition experts in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health recommended avoiding vitamin D deficiency, but warned against taking high doses of the vitamin.

“As a key micronutrient,” the authors wrote, “vitamin D should be given particular focus—not as a ‘magic bullet’ to beat COVID-19, as the scientific evidence base is severely lacking at this time—but rather as part of a healthy lifestyle strategy to ensure that populations are nutritionally in the best possible place.”

Thus, while it’s a good idea to get enough vitamin D — pandemic or not — it’s too early to say that a lack of vitamin D makes COVID-19 worse, or that supplementing with vitamin D provides any protection against the disease.

ICU will be maxed out here in Houston by the weekend, childrens hospitals are opening adult wards to accomodate

know a couple dozen people who have contracted the virus personally by now. 2 hospitalized. 1 was in LTC, one has heart failure. both over 70. both lived and recovered

(EDIT: except the uncle I have who died suddenly a while back, but that was out of state)

medical treatment for covid is getting incrementally better

hoping to catch it soon just in case i need to be hospitalized when I get it but I doubt I'll need to be. being tested 1x per week

governor is bullshitting but the county has a mandatory indoor mask order and is considering another shutdown

feeling more and more grateful that of all the pandemics we could have had, this is the one we got. a worse one is inevitable

I suspect over the next few months, as this crisis worsens, Trump’s lack of leadership on Covid will be his political undoing. He has been so dangerously out of touch this whole time and, while seemingly immune to criticism all this time, the danger of his general ignorance I would suspect is becoming more clear to more people.

Anyone have any thoughts or takes the the potential protective benefits melatonin? NAC?

I hope all of you guys stay well. Asante, P_B, koods, JSB, feevers, trex, blind ass... there's a few more I feel close to and miss, if you want to stay in touch shoot me a PM. I may come around more in the future but for the moment I find that I need to decompress during my free time and the internet doesn't help me decompress anymore. wish I could meet you all in person. shoot me a PM if you wanna stay in touch.:sun: for those of you I've argued with, it's nothing personal, I wish you all the best as well.

Seems like that's a benefit of flattening the curve that doesn't get talked about enough.

I had the same thought about wanting to get sick before hospitals start maxing out, my state is being somewhat more cautious than most though so supposedly that's not a concern here anymore. Who knows what the real peak will look like though. Things will get ugly if there ends up being more lockdowns, but if people can't handle wearing masks and distancing as much as possible that's probably where things are headed.

Good luck in the trenches man, stay safe. we're here whenever you need to vent.

Promising news on the vaccine front:

https://www.interview-welt.de/2020/06/24/wissenschaftszeitung-weltweit-erster-inaktivierter-covid-19-impfstoff-produziert-antik%C3%B6rper/
Quote:

The Phase I/II clinical trials of the world's first inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products under the China National Biotec Group (CNBG), which is affiliated with the China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), produced antibodies in all participants, the organizations said in a press release today.the results of the clinical trial showed that the vaccine was safe without serious side effects. And after different procedures and different vaccine doses were used, all participants in the vaccine group had high antibodies.

Another one out of Oxford is moving into Phase 3 as well.

I have a feeling most of us will have been infected by the time they roll it out, but who knows how long the antibodies will last.

I’m profoundly ignorant in this area but could potential antibody issues be attenuated by booster or maintenance shots for some time? Not sure how this would interact with potential future mutations, etc.

I think at this point it's pretty much unknown. Lots of hospitals are doing antibody studies with patients who recover, so far my cousin 'recovered' what I think was about 2 months ago and still has antibodies, but she had a particularly awful case which in theory results in stronger antibodies. I haven't heard of anybody losing their antibodies yet which is definitely promising. There have been cases of people who never test positive for them at all after testing positive for COVID. That could be from a false-positive test for COVID initially, or possibly other aspects of their immune system such as t cells fought it off before antibodies were produced.

As far as the booster, we'll have to see how long the antibodies last in this study, and if they're actually effective against COVID in the wild. I don't know if there are any studies on giving the vaccine to people who already have antibodies, though it's probably being done in mice. COVID's trajectory really isn't being talked about much... like if it'll wind up mutating to such a degree that a vaccine becomes a seasonal guessing game like with the flu. From the article it sounded like the researchers are confident that their version covers all the current known mutations.

If everything goes well I'll be doing my clinical rotations in a complex-medical rehab hospital in January. Unfortunately with the after-effects that are being seen I'm guessing it'll be pretty full with post-covid complications. Whatever gets put on the market will be getting jabbed into my arm whether I want it or not I'm sure
