Syringe filter LC lid

Never tried these. I blend my agar wedges in an Eberbach unit + grow out my LC on a stir plate. So spawn jar GE filters (SFD under plastic lid, 1/2" hole) have always worked out fine for me. Especially if I do store my LC, it's typically very short term. I got the nice autoclavable plastic lids I like to use on my spawn jars. They're the same price and nicer than the Ball/Kerr storage ones. Shouldn't leak but I got a couple rubber gaskets to play around with.
I wanna store some for longer time periods so I grabbed a couple wheel filters + heavy rubber SHIPs.
1. These filters only have a tiny 5/32" hole, I know people buy + use these lids but is that really enough GE? Thinking of using 2 per lid maybe.
I always open LC lids to free pour or pull syringes to inoculate. I am going to pull + plug a bunch of syringes to store so for convenience sake I might try these SHIPs. Do you guys really trust sanitizing and pushing needles thru these ports?
These are cheap and easy enough

Are those Tattler brand rubber gaskets? If so those things are garbage, they do not fit the inside of the lid and will fall off and be a big problem when opening the jar to inoculate or anything. The thicker clear silicone gaskets are usually a little over-sized to squeeze into the bottom of the lid and pretty much stay there.
A syringe filter provides plenty of GE for an LC they don't really need much or probably even any.
Personally I do NOT like self healing ports of any type, they are a vector for contams. How many times have I seen red rubber floating in my syringe after sucking up? I have a male and female luer lock on my lids. The female has a plug on it during normal operation and male has a syringe filter. When ready to withdraw inoculate I remove plug and attach syringe to female port and tilt jar and withdraw.

I don't know what brand they are but I immediately noticed they are too small for a 70mm jar I just picked 2 up to see what could be done with them. These lids are nice, they never leak. Since this was just to try out I just grabbed a couple each filters, ports, gaskets.
The luer lock with the plug on the lid is such a good idea! I was trying to think up a way to keep a port sterile and that thought didn't occur to me. Do you remember what size hole you use?
I don't think I'm going to use the rubber SHIPs.
I think I like these! I'm just gonna keep it simple and just use syringe filters on lids. The 5/32" hole fits it perfect, stays so tight and flat to the cap it doesn't need silicone. I had a spare vented cap that came on a media bottle - has a hole that fits one of these snug too.

You only need the GE in the LC vessel so you can aspirate the liquid.

Really? I did not know this! So if I'm not aspirating thru the lid I can just use solid plastic lids?

I have. It might run out of air if kept too long like that but I tend to use LC up quickly. Long as you don’t plan to keep it around in the fridge or something for months it shouldn’t hurt.

It makes sense because you can keep LC in plugged syringes for a while.
I use my LC pretty fast too so I never used special lids but since I'm planning on storing some I p guess these will work out pretty well for me then. Super easy, just drill the holes and pop it in place.
