Help! Something has taken over my desktop!
    #2677737 - 05/14/04 11:54 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Okay so like a week or two ago I started getting this pop-up. It's what it looks like here. You can't close it!! You can't see your desktop. It opens up automatically and the only way you can open a program is by clicking on one of the link and THEN you can start working on your computer. This is ridiculous. Also - when I start up my computer - the System window opens up automatically and now these 1 inch by 1 inch windows pop up ... 1 says "Done" the other says "Done" then today one said "Ebb Criss" and you have to keep clicking "OK" in order for them to eventually stop popping up!!!

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPpp!!! I have run Norton and Ad-aware and still no luck!! :frown:

I dunno if this'll help or not...but it probably wouldn't hurt to give it a shot ---> Spybot

if your under windoze then pop open task manager and kill the offending threads... then get spybot and run it at least weekly. get a real browser like opera or mozilla then enable the pop-up blocking and only allow cookies for specific sites. this will cut down on a whole lotta bullshit.

basically you want to run ad-aware and spybot first.
then go to - www.spywarewarrior.com
go to "HijackThis Logs" forum
Download HijackThis directly from - http://spywarewarrior.com/files/hijackthis.zip

Important: Create a specific folder on your hard drive called HijackThis to keep its backups. Download and unzip HijackThis.exe into this folder.

GO ahead and run HijackThis.. and then paste a copy of the log when you get the results.. POST this log on the HijackThis Logs forum.. with a title explaining your problem.. and someone will tell you which things to "fix" from the HijackThis program.. do not delete anything on your own. Good luck.

Does it start whenever you start up Internet Explorer? If it is, download  Hijack This.

Try looking at the installed programs on your computer, see if there's anything suspicious. Also, look inside your C:\Program Files\. If there's any folder that you don't know what it is, and looks suspicious, look into it, and find out what it is.

Finally, try and find the name of the popup, see if you can right click anywhere to click properties or something. If we could find the name, we could probably find something about it on a web site about how to remove it.

Edit: ah, Shroomism already has a link to Hijack This.

I use adaware 6 myself, just make sure you check for updates, then use a custom scan, and have it scan every damn file on your comp, nothing has yet escaped this combo for me.
Peace~

well, nothing you know of. maybe adware et al don't know about some things.... eh? 'tis a thought and a decent probability at that.

I have Ad-aware 6, and it didn't find Omegasearch. The most annoying hijack I've had.

yes its important to go into settings in ad-aware and make sure you fully optimize it to scan everything.. then choose custom scan.

CWshredder and HijackThis will get rid of just about any broswer hijack 'search' bar or anything like that.

alrigt - i used Ad Aware and it found only 19 things - deleted it and still had the hijack. I then ran SpyBot and it found 111 things. I deleted the stuff and now (and im hoping) i think it's gone.

However I still get System32 popping up on startup (which i dont think is a hijack... maybe something i clicked by accident?) and I get these little windows that pop up in this order:
"dwn"
"dwn"
"done"
"done"
"ebn criss"
"ebn criss" (i think it's ebn or ebb...)

if you go into "Control Panel"
then open up "Administrative Tools"
then open up "Services"
scroll down till you see "Messenger" (alphabetized)
double click it.
in the "startup type:"dropdown box, select "disabled"
right below that there is a button that says "stop"
click it. ( a small window will show it closing, then disappear) after that,
hit the "apply" button, then hit the "ok" button.

This is especially good if you use kazaa type progz.
