Definitely buffer the heating pad with a towel. You'd be surprised how hot those things can get. Use a thermometer in the safe for a while to monitor the air temperature; Keep in mind that the substrate can be anywhere from 5-12* warmer than the air, so assume the worst and add 12* to the air temperature. You may not even need a heating pad, who knows. At any rate, good luck!

Or you could hook up a light bulb to provide heat. It doesn't make any difference to the mycellium if it is in light or dark.

you can get a digital thermometer with a sensor on the end of a long skinny cable for 10-15 dollars at target or radio shack. put the sensor inside and leave the readout outside.
