Flowhood build.

Going to be building my flowhood in the next few days so I'm starting to iron out the final details.
Is 3/4 inch birch plywood decent for a flowhood? What about painting or staining it?
I'd hate for something to grow on it but I'm not sure what to use for a finish. It's going to be a 24x24. I'll post some pictures as it comes along.

I wouldn't use plywood but I'm sure people have. Plywood is a bunch of pieces of wood glued together, I would used solid wood to make it sturdy and with trim for the edges to help with the seal.
I'm not cabinet maker but I know plywood wouldn't be my pick

I wouldn't use particle board but plywood is the only thing I would use.

Im about to build one as well, I just figured some nice oak or pine would be great. It's not that big so I wouldn't mind spending some extra cash on some nice wood and a lil shine over it. Check out Stonesun's flowhood build made with plywood. Looks awesome.
Particle board was what I was thinking when I saw plywood though, my bad.

Either way remember all the extra weight your going to be adding to it. 3/4 plywood gets heavy.

I went with the 3/4 inch birch. Made all the cuts today and started testing some pilot and clearance holes. Most of the construction will happen tomorrow I hope. Still unsure about finishing it. Birch is tricky to stain so I was thinking about just painting it but not sure if it's even necessary.

I would imagine even just a finish of poly or something simple would suffice, assuming you dont have much humidity and you would be keeping it away from any aqueous solutions.

Gotta spring for the nicer plywood like birch et al to avoid a lot of voids in the plywood sandwhich layers which are very hideous on any exposed ends. My eyes. My eyes. I usually just hit em with some killz primer and call it good.

Did most of the major carpentry yesterday, went smoother than I anticipated. Have to mount my fan today and silicone all the seams. I think I'll go with a coat of kilz primer like sandman420 mentioned, I have a can of it around so why not.
Hoping to have my filter mounted today and then trim her out tomorrow morning.

I used the formica surfaced MDF sheets. Makes all your surfaces basically kitchen counter tops. Very easy cleaning and no need to coat.

Almost done with her. Just have to frame in my prefilter and silicone the front trim. Had some hiccups along the way but everything came together.

Yea, I can lift it myself but can't carry it up the stairs. The filter was so damn tight I didn't think it was going to fit. I backed a few screws out a couple turns and it dropped in, tightened them back up and she was good to go. Going to do some tests on it tonight, I can't believe I don't have to work in a fucking tote anymore.

NIce. Do you have a parts list? I am going to get a buidl going too but I'm freak about peaking the right filter fan combo. I was hoping for a 2' x 3'.

Got her set and and did a little testing. The flow is consistent throughout the face of the filter! This picture is with the lighter about 6 inches from the filter. Looks like it's maybe a 35 degree angle or so, the fan was dialed back quite a bit here. I see so many conflicting opinions about the lighter test and what the flame should do.

Also I need to read up on flow hood technique. I just realized I spent all this time planning/building this thing but never really took the time to study proper technique when using one.

Did some sterile work last night and I think it went great. So nice to have proper visability. I watched a few lab procedure videos on working with sterile flow, helped out my confidence a bit. Just waiting a few days to see how everything came out. I had very low contamination rate with a SAB but I'll be working with bags so the flow hood was a must.

Looks great and you have an organized set up.
Is the prefilter ontop with the blower house open? I'm thinking of going this route.

Yea for now it's just resting on top until I find a 15x15 filter which will fit into the box. Going to put furring strips 1 inch from the top so it sits almost flush.

Bed bath and beyond in the cabinet organization section. Came in a pack of 2 for 20. Had to find something to stay in the flow.
