Phase 6: Harvest, rehydrate, conclusion and continuation.
- The total harvest was 750 wet grams. 150 less than I anticipated. I may have harvested too early.

- Rehydrated for about 4 hours.
- Though I used folded cheesecloth as a substitute for polyfill it was definitely the 1-inch layer of vermiculite that provided protection from contamination. The backup master/starter jar that I prepared with only cheesecloth as a protective barrier colonized, but had bacterial issues and once put to a bulk substrate succumbed to trichoderma.
- In the future, I will continue to use vermiculite on my WBS, but I will couple it with micropore tape at the four injection holes. Two is one, one is none.
- The 11 jars that I G2G transferred were all successful and I believe that was due to keeping the colonized grain on top of the sterilized WBS and not shaking the half-pint jar at all. This is because mycelium itself is resistant to contamination when fully colonized. This allowed the mycelium to protect the WBS below as it grew down into the half-pint jar.
- My next steps will be to do more G2G transfers and shoeboxes. I will hydrate the WBS in a rice cooker, then load into jars, and steam sterilize the WBS for 6 hours (though for speed's sake a PC would be more beneficial). These jars will not have vermiculite on them and will be allowed to cool overnight in my giant canning pot, then I will move them to my SAB and do the G2G transfers.
- Any grows starting from scratch will be done with a starter jar (apparently master jar is the incorrect term) that has a 1-inch layer of vermiculite and micropore tape covering the injection holes. Start by rice cooking the WBS to hydrate, load into the starter jar, then steam sterilize for 6 hours (recommend PC for speed), then I will place the jar in the refrigerator for a speed cool down for about 3 hours. Once it has been cooled I will then inoculate with a spore syringe inside a SAB. Once this jar is fully colonized, then I will proceed to G2G transfer and shoeboxes.
- Because I am making my own spore syringes it would be best to screen the spores on agar to minimize contamination, wasted time, and to optimize genetics. I could be wrong, but it would make sense that isolated genetics would be a contributing factor in producing better yields and the coveted canopy.
Last photo of the best shoebox before harvesting:

Also, going to try switching out the shoebox cover for a plastic bag once pins start showing on this next flush to allow for a potentially taller grow.

I'm really only doing it to give myself a point of reference so I can reduce or increase the amount I spray it in subsequent grows as needed. Once I feel I'm getting the moisture right so I can set & forget, I'll stop counting.
The tek says to spray for 20 seconds but due to variances in time between sprays, spray bottle types, and human error & different climates, I figure it is best to figure out how many sprays works for me and then work off that from memory.
It's not a permanent thing haha - just using heuristics to help me learn until I don't need heuristics

@Rhizomorph Exactly, 20 seconds is variable, hence the counting and eventual dialing it in by eye. Experience is what gives the finger tip feel, or the ability to recognize contamination and optimal grow conditions.

The second flush was only 434 wet grams.

On this flush, I did switch out the shoebox lids for grocery bags and it seems to allow the fruits to grow a bit taller and potentially thicker (perhaps due to the increase FAE).
For the third flush, I decided to spray 60 sprays of water directly onto the colonized substrate, drained out any excess water, and I will probably swap out the lids again for plastic bags once I notice pins.

I've noticed my fruits tend to be somewhat thin from the SFF shoebox tek with the lid latched on, but this may be genetics as well since I'm running MS until I isolate some stronger cultures. Gonna try switching to a plastic bag once pins show up on the box I'm running now.
How big/how many holes do you put in the bag? In Bod's shoebox tek he doesn't specify and I haven't tested out what works best for me yet.

how are you counting the flushes here - are you putting several shoeboxes together for your wet weight?

@Rhizomorph Yeah, I've had similar results using MSS of Golden Teacher with shoeboxes. You have to be sure to unlatch the top when the fruits are near popping, but even with doing that there is resistance from the lid that prevents the mushrooms from growing taller, hence switching out the lid for a plastic bag. I got the idea from Bod's Shoebox Tek *thumbs up*.
I used target bags. It was big enough to stretch/wrap around the shoebox fairly tightly. If possible, use a clear/see-through bag as it will be easier to see the mushrooms grow and when you will need to harvest. The target bag was dark grey and I couldn't see anything lol.
Two of the bags had thumbnail size holes in the tippy top and one of them seemed to not have any holes. I don't believe these bags are airtight, so there is not much need for modification, but the ones with the thumbnail size hole seemed to do better.
Please share your results!
@smalltalk_canceled Yes, during this grow I aimed to make 5 shoeboxes, but only made 3. So, I am combining the weight of 3 shoeboxes when I report the wet weight. The current total wet weight from the 3 shoeboxes is: 1,184 grams.

Okay, so combined flushes from 3 monos? thank you. Do you also know how many quarts of spawn you used per mono? its interesting in terms of your wet weight, gauging your grow

@smalltalk_canceled 3 shoeboxes (SFF Shoebox Tek)
Each of the shoeboxes had about 3 half-pint jars of colonized WBS.

I very much enjoyed this thread. It is brimming with dry humor from both sides. Good job!
