Are you aware of how condescending your words come across Chief? You might not be aware or doing it on purpose but like every post you've made in this thread is like that...

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

@JSB, I think it would be fine to drag the crate into the bedroom. I think as long as it's comfy then she'll get appropriately attached to it and it doesn't really matter where she'll be as long as she's in there, eventually.

The reason I specifically wouldn't do it in my room is because I'm a sucker, and I know for a fact that I would've waited until my ex fell asleep(to avoid the disapproving look) and swooped that sweet crying puppy up into bed for a cuddle...and that's bad for crate training, there really is no worse thing you can do to drag it out.
:mmmkay:
So as long as you can not do that, I think you're good to go lol.

I'm not a dog trainer though, and it might behoove you to find a local dog trainer with good reviews who has like a bonified method/system, because I could see how being home with her all the time could eventually lead to separation anxiety, but I'm not really sure.

I just mean it's waaaay easier when you can telecommute vs having to be on site every day. That's kind of a nightmare with a puppy unless you've got some significant help.

So yeah, the whole idea behind most puppy training - crate training being no exception, is overwhelming positivity - and stopping while you're ahead, always manage your expectations and end on a good note, even if you've got to compromise a little and don't really accomplish what you set out for. Especially with smart dogs(and smart animals in general) is they'll start getting anxious if you ask too much too fast. Consistency and proper socialization are the most important thing. A puppy class is fantastic for that, and some people do puppy playdates - most dog parks I've been to don't let young puppies in, and if they end up having a bad experience there it could make them dog aggressive.

Regarding the crate, she is probably going to scream and cry like crazy that first week as she gets used to overnights in crates - if you've got some neighbors you share any walls with maybe leave a note giving them a heads up and a bottle of wine or something, because it can get bad. If you give into it, it'll only drag it out. The best way to shorten it is make the crate as comfortable as possible - get her a bed, get her toys, I like to cover it with stuff so it's more den like. I also left it open when he was out and about and would encourage him to take naps and be comfortable in there. I've never tried crate training with the crate in my bedroom, but she might have an easier time if you're in the same room..it might also just drag it out more and cause more separation anxiety.

Puppy gates are a god send too. Especially during the work day. She's gonna get into shit, without a doubt, and the easiest way to puppy proof is to get yourself outfitted with dog gates. Chewing sprays are okay for some particularly voracious chewers or when she starts to teethe - she is going to destroy something you love, and it's best to just accept it now .

Also, for any properly socialized dog - a tired dog is a well behaved dog. There are going to be some inherent issues, like chewing/teething, that are a little unavoidable. Keeping that pup worn the fuck out, and giving her stuff she is allowed to destroy(and of course setting your rules and boundaries and enforcing them consistency) is going to go a long way to making sure it doesn't spiral out of control.

I have to work on my dogs leash etiquette a bit, gotten sloppy throughout quarantine - he's okay until he goes on one of those long retractable leashes and a deer or something he wants to chase walks into the picture. I sprained my ankle in an unrelated tumble last week and asked my dad to take my dog for a quick pee while I rested my foot a bit, and the dog tried to chase after a deer, yanked my dad pretty hard and suddenly - ruptured an old hernia which led to septic shock and almost death...so...yeah, I'm feeling super guilty and remembering how important it is to keep up on that training. Especially for large, young, energetic dogs, for sure.

Damn....I had a friend a long time ago be in a similar boat with his father. I'll tell you same thing I told him, you cant control life. You didnt purposely tell him to do it with the intent of harming him. So dont beat yourself up

I hear ya. I''m real strict about my dogs and my bed, so no worries there.

I'm reticent to approach a trainer though, TBH. I feel like there's too many people in such professions who get arrogant about how their system works. I much prefer to take my information from multiple sources.

However I am also open to the fact that I'm being a dick, and that perhaps I should swallow my pride and find a trainer.

In my opinion. Whether or not you need a trainer depends on the relationship you have with your dog. Someone dropped our dog off as a puppy and we saved it. Idk how it was so smart but it picked up on our lifestyle almost instantly. My advise is to try to get on the dogs level and really get to know and communicate with it and not with just words

Has anyone ever read or heard of a really great/highly recommended book on dog training?

She's apparantly up there in the top ten when it comes to smartest dog breeds, so I've definitely got an advantage there. ACD's are well known for their ability in training:

Like many working dogs, the Australian Cattle Dog has high energy levels, an active mind, and a level of independence.[7] The breed ranks 10th in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, rated as one of the most intelligent dogs ranked by obedience command trainability.[8]

Aw, thankyou. I'm okay, I didn't realize that's what did it until the dust settled recently. And he's gonna be okay, he's mostly out of the woods at this point. If he hadn't been okay I probably would blame myself forever for it though.

I can just tell from pictures thats a pretty smart dog. Not sure what kinda breed that is but looks kinda loke a mutt to me. I know Australia Shepard have to be very well trained and ran for a few miles a day and played with for few hours with toys and a good brushing. Otherwise they are incredibly aggressive and are one the few breeds along with pitfalls ive seen go into rage syndrome. This is not a dog u let do whatever it wants. Not trying to be condescending just don't want anything to be hurt. Like I said that dog looks quite smart and they do take to training eventually. Its just they are high energy and prey drive being meant for herding or maybe some light retrieving and birding amd not much else.
