Benefits of a MS grow * 1
    #26763318 - 06/21/20 03:01 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I’m fairly new to the forum I’ve done my share of ms brf grows back in the day but the last year or so I kicked it up and have been diving in to everything you wonderful people have been doing for the past ten years and found my niche mostly in agar to grain or agar to lc and trays. The more I work with isolates or wittled down cultures the more I think about the Benefits that doing a mutispore grow held. Seeing multiple phenotypes in one grow you can kind of see where one might dominate the other. Sure you can never really be sure if some clusters might be and probably are mutiple phenos but you can actually see them all in action whereas doing a single culture I kind of feel like it’s shoot a dart at board full of maybes. Yes once you find that single good producer that’s all well and good but the search for it is laborious. Especially when working with panaeolus your not even sure if that good looking culture will even produce fruit at all or maybe very little even though it might look great on agar. I suppose I’m just proposing the question that why go through all the trouble when you could narrow it down to a clean diverse looking culture on agar and try and fruit that. Clone the best looking phenos and go from there. Why spend all the energy going through mediocre cultures one by one guessing at what looks like it might work instead of trying out multiple and save some time.

I hold the same feelings.. MS to clone takes out a lot of guess work, but my assumption was that, like most myco work, it’s just fun.

It takes allot of transfers and patience to end up with a handful of mono cultures and then there's no guarantee of a stellar producer.

Hey..! What I like doing Is grabbing pins a few hours old and cloning them to a agar dish.

I look for pins that might be fatter than the rest of them and pins that's growing In clusters on the center top of the tub.

I have found that pins are fast and aggressive on agar and less chance to be contaminated.

Each Pin clone will end up In a quart jar of oats and each jar of spawn will end up growing In It own grow bag (large .5 micron filter bag)..

What is your method with those bags there. Are they all in one grain/sub

I mix up my coir and verm. In a Ice chest.

3 quarts of hydrated coir/verm goes Into each bag.
1 quart jar of spawn from clones goes Into the bag.
Mix It all up throw a little hydrated coir/verm on top to cover the grain.
Seal bag and wait.
When bag Is ready to go Into the fruiting mode cut the bag down.

Place all bags in a tub and treat the tub as If your growing in It.

The advantage to this method:
1 You can see how well each clone Is producing.

2 If you have a problem with trich just pull that one bag out. You don't loose the whole tub.

3 It's easy to harvest. I pull each bag out placed on a table and trim away.

4 Easy clean Up. Just toss bag In trash and hope Greta Thunberg not watching Haha...

There can be lots of benefits to a ms grow. One example is for crossing cubes; one needs to do many ms grows to find the desired phenotypes sometimes. Especially if they are recessive. I did dozens of ms grows some of which were complete busts, to find and stabilize the Rustywhite variety. Was 4 years of unpredictable, especially in the early generations.

Well I think that’s what most people here do. Run ms grows looking for clones until they find a really good one, then bank the culture and move to the next variety. At least that’s what I’ve been doing.

Ms is fun I do a lot of them, but I also like knowing I can run a tub of any variety whenever I want and get a good yield of potent shrooms. I was mostly doing clones just for fun until I got my first couple tubs of weak ass ms.

For example just this weekend I went out camping and ate 4g of ms Tasmanian and it felt like .75g of normal cubes. Luckily since it was an untested batch I brought backup but stuff like that is avoidable with clones.

You could try smaller containers to try to find good strains faster.
I am very interested in your method of using LC to trays. Are you using coir/verm as substrate for the trays? How do you prevent over-hydration yet still provide enough LC to colonize the substrate well?

I do have a compost I dump all used substrate materials. It's the plastic bags I throw In the trash..

RR says they are so thick, you can reuse them. Just a thought. If you use zip ties to close them of course. Also, if you care so much about the environment, there is biodegradable ones there apparently, and also there are hughe wide mouth jars which I am currently trying out, which is also an alternative.

Thanks for the Info..

I have about eight hundred bags I have to use until I can even think of biodegradable bags.. But It's a good idea...
