Problems from compression?

Spawned a shoebox this morning, used 2 quarts of spawn. Actually turned out to be too much and didn't want to make the substrate super high in the shoebox, when I was leveling it out and pressing down the edges I also caught myself kind of pressing everything down all over making it level. I know ideally it is best for the substrate to be loose and airy, but have I caused irreversible harm by doing what I did? I didn't pack and compress it down to the point of smushing it, but I did press down on everything sort of compressing and leveling it. I'm worried if I may of messed things up by doing that, I shouldn't of used that much spawn and substrate. I'm just worried about what I caused as a result of this...?

You'll be fine. The worst that'll happen is it may slow down colonization a bit, but it'll be fine.

Yeah I'm worried I did too much compressing and what may happen because I know you're supposed to leave it loose and airy and not compress it...
Do yields get affected at all? Or problems with pinning?

I guess it really depends on the degree of compression. You could always just "reset" it since it was only spawned this morning. Or you could leave it be and add a casing if you don't want to reset it. It could be fine if you just leave it completely alone, too. Its hard to say without knowing exactly how compressed it is.
Honestly, I would just remix it, since it was just made today

I once did a test where I compresses the shit out of my sub. It colonized fine unfortunately I got paranoid and tossed the tub before I could finish the experiment. I believe the concern is with anerobic bacteria. This is why you want it "airy". However I think once it is colonized with clean spawn everything is a OK. I'd let it ride. If it is a failure well then it's not really a failure it was a learning experience. Just be sure to let us know the results of you do leave it be.

Well whenever I spawned the shoebox I also added some of left the over bulk substrate on top to cover the top and exposed grains. Does that count as a casing layer? Or you do you mean some other additional different type?

I always pack down my subs. I've done the same little experiment leaving one sub with the same grain loose and patting down the other, basically turned out the same, maybe a day or so difference in colonization time, but the yield was the same.

Yeah, because honestly Gizmo I don’t really feel like having to mix and do it all over again. You know me, I’m OCD about getting things perfect. I did it for awhile to get it perfectly level and look right, and it does, but I had to compress it a bit because two jars of spawn ended up being too much, almost filling the shoebox a lot. That’s why I was pressing it down a bit. I really should of just tossed a little out at the beginning. Usually I fill my grain jars halfway, but this time I did them about 3/4 full, which I thought would be negligible, but it really was a whole lot more. Also, I really like just doing shoeboxes, for personal and space reasons, I don’t want big monotubs. I don’t want to have to mix it all up and worry about getting it perfectly level and everything again, plus I used a liner this time too, so I don’t want to risk and mess anything else up. I guess it’s kind of like if it’s not broke then don’t fix it. Maybe it will be perfectly fine, but if it messes everything up then yeah I’ll definitely just chalk it up to a learning experience. Hopefully all will still be well and I’m just getting worried and wondering for no reason. Hopefully it’s still all good...

You will be fine. Intamp my edges down all the time. Even compressed coir with colonize if there is water in it.

Thanks, hopefully! I wasn't that worried about the edges because it is common to do that. I was worrying because I packed down and compressed the whole thing making it level and there was a lot more than I had expected. Hopefully everything will be all good!
Other than the edges, have you ever tamped or packed down the whole thing?
