drying and picking

Hi, can anyone tell me, how long after you harvest, can you wait until drying. If harvest some, then can I wait a day or two to harvest a few more before drying in the dehydrator or do you have to dry them right away?

They can sit on a counter for a few days at room temp until you have more to dehydrate.

Better to stick them in a bag in the fridge. Some people say up to a week. I know 4 days is fine.

Stick em in a fridge if you need to store some that arent dry. DONT LEAVE THEM OUT ON A COUNTER. They begin to lose potency the moment they are picked up until the time they are cracker dry.
Leaving them on a counter for a few days is a bad idea. They can and do rot over time once picked.

How often have you done this and I bet they are floppy as a flacid dick by the time you dry them if you leave them out on a counter for that long.

Never had an issue in 10 years. They dry cracker dry, and just as potent as normal. No one can tell the difference on my end between mush that sat on a counter for three days and mush that was immediately dried. Maybe yours were just not potent when you tried this in the past. Limp when dry? Mushrooms don't dry limp if they sit on a counter...

You must live in a very dry environment. Where I live I’ve accidentally left them out for a couple days without dehydration and they straight up rot and stay wet. Look up mushroom rot once picked because they 100% do rot. And they will definitely lose potency. To what degree I cannot say but it’s a fact. I’d rather do it right than have potentially less potent or rotted mushies.

I keep mine between two layers of paper towel and rotate so that no wet spots form. I don't make giant piles that will rot, they lay in a single layer. Florida is not a dry climate, but the interior of my house is AC'd which would bring humidity down. My mushrooms are usually half dry by the time they go to a dehydrator from sitting on a counter.
I haven't had mushrooms mold or lose potency due to this, and notice zero difference in potency between refrig mushrooms and counter mushrooms.

Still really not the best idea but at least you’re doing more than just setting them on the counter and waiting to dehydrate em. I’m not gonna recommend anyone do that regardless of your success with it because it has and will rot. I’m not meaning any of this in a hateful way. Just stating facts you can search and see for oneself on here. Have you eaten those that were left out compared to those that were dried immediately?

I’m not gonna say you’re lying bro. I’m just saying it’s better to fridge em or dehydrate immediately because oxygen causes degradation of Psilocin and psilocybin. To what degree, I’m not certain but any loss that’s preventable is well....preventable.

Oxygen degrades Psilocin. I haven't heard of Psilocybin oxidizing before though (except aqueous solutions under light), send me some info.

Drying at 95F is perfectly fine...I wouldn't go above 120 when drying, I had dried and eaten and didnt notice any significant loss....

That’s a quote from a tc but you can google this info and see for yourself.

Yes, I know temperature affects it, but I have not found any information that supports evidence that oxygen does. How old is that quote? 95F? 120F? That is information from before my time.
Edit: A post made in 2003? Anything more definitive and modern than that?

I mean man, the quote does say oxidizing occurs to psilocybin but other than that check this out https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/mystery-of-why-magic-mushrooms-go-blue-solved/4010870.article this also says in the article that psilocybin oxidizes. It’s about bluing but discussed oxidation of psilocybin. I swear I’d admit I was wrong if what I read didn’t say otherwise.

I’m not saying that info isn’t outdated in the quote but oxygen absolutely oxidizes psilocybin. Again, TO WHAT DEGREE, IM NOT CERTAIN but it happens. The info is out there. And plenty of the teks on here are just as old and still just as valid. I’m not here to argue. The OP can trust whoever I personally don’t care but I would research more on the subject if I were them.
EDIT: the point of dehydrating is to preserve them from degrading over time. The longer you wait the less potent they will be. If leaving them out was no harm then why would you even need to dehydrate them? Why would anyone need dehydrators or desiccant ?

"All of the six mushroom pigments the team identified are products of a cascade reaction starting with psilocybin. A phosphatase enzyme takes off its phosphate group, converting it into psilocin. An oxidising laccase then creates psilocyl radicals, which combine to form C-5 coupled subunits and then further polymerise via C-7. ‘I think they did a beautiful job of showing the cascade reaction"
It does not even mention whether oxygen is a catalyst of oxidation for Psilocybin. Oxidation can occur without oxygen present in the environment. Just trying to get accurate and definitive data here. Hopefully a TC can set me straight soon.

If I’m wrong I’m wrong and the op will find out. If I’m right the same applies. Good luck to you and all the work you do! Information can be tough to sift through sometimes with much being outdated and still applying while some of it is outdated and obviously wrong. I’m hoping if I’m wrong I find research saying so that way I can better understand this. I’m always willing to learn and grow.
