Subs love to grow around the base of flax bushes and inside the bush, it pays to move foliage around.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Psilocybe subsecotioides

I had harvested three secos with out the gate gills, rosecomb mutation type twisted shit. I compered them to a couple normal looking secos and cut em up to show the mutantness...

hey Rodger nice pics. I checked a few patches today too, rains great for keeping the public away but not the best for photos so I don't bother if its pissing down which it was. Didn't get heaps but still happy with a little haul.
Branched out a bit trying to find new territory, had a look around in a gum plantation as I've seen some videos of people in SA finding them in the grass round gums but no joy for me. Going to check out some pine plantations hopefully in the near future, was much nicer searching without having to look over your shoulder the whole time.

Ugh, went to check one of the tiny patches I knew about this morning and it's been stripped bare. Was only pins yesterday morning and I wasn't really expecting them to be ready to pick today. Was thinking I might get a few there after this rain, but it wasn't to be. Gutted.

I've only started looking in earnest the last couple of years, but it seems like this is a tough season? Feel like the best option may be to collect some colonised woodchip and try to get something going in my back yard.

I've had a bit of that, at first I thought it was careless people cause the ground was a bit churned up, but the other possibility is birds. If you want to get a patch going at home you should look into starting growth on corrugated cardboard then transfer to wood chip. Trying it myself, early days but it looks promising so far

Skip the cardboard. . . It will keep moisture levels okay as it starves your myc. . . Go straight to hardwood chip or sawdust. . .

Oh, that's interesting. I started a couple of experiments today, one with some stem butts on damp cardboard, and another following the smoothie tek - mushroom slurry on wet woodchip. We'll see how those turn out I guess. With the smoothie method, I've read since that maybe fresh woodchip isn't ideal. If I can find any more subs, I'll try some aged woodchip as well.

Yeah, i feel you on that tip. Found a couple new areas today, there was only like 5-10 in each area so i wouldnt consider them patches.

Was wracking my brains about new spots this year, found one nice one but than the next visit it got pillaged. Thinking ill have to travel further for some nice patches.

Seems to be so much areas with potential that are private property and not much public grounds. If they are public grounds it seems like they are visited by hunters. Sometimes it feels like you can't win.

Yeah I think I remember you saying that but this had already been started... so I've added barkchip and sawdust, both pine though, has started to colonize the wood, slowly. Does hardwood work better? Pine chip seemed the logical option because that's what I find them growing on. Have  outdoor attempt which has a mix of woods including a few natives plus plum..

Is anyone able to pitch in on my ID request here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26755825

I have taken a spore print and I am still not 100%. Just kinda worried that I am not getting any replies because people aren't sure what it is.

Bark isn’t really eaten by subs as they aren’t a great fan of lignin.
Pine works when aged, if its fresh the turpenes can kill growth, though some on here suggest that CaCO3 can raise the pH and make it more edible, though my experiment in doing this had less growth than fresh pine. . .
I have access to poplar, eucalyptus and cherry, all of which sub myc seem to love.

I’m going to run some experiments with fresh pine and fresh fermented pine to see what happens. . .

What? Subs are a lignicolous species. They colonize eucalyptus bark well.

Roger: Can you spore print subsecotioides or do you have to do a bark transfer to under a Ponga tree?

Yeah cardboard doesn't last long from what I remember. Are you using 2:1:1? 2 vermaculite,:1 sawdust:1 water? Are you sterilising the sawdust as well? Or just lazy ghetto style?

Okay would be interested to hear what you find. I went for the barkchip because that's what the first decent patch I found appeared to be growing in... I also have access to poplar, eucalyptus and cherry... I don't have access to a wood chopper unfortunately. Time to get out the axe I guess.. btw that little container has been going at least 1 1/2 months so I am guessing/hoping that it's got something there that's giving it enough to survive.

lol its just logical to go into foliage. if your just walking by chips, you are not hunting properly. you need 2 be knee deep/head high in bushes.

On that note, it is true the public patches are a racing game. Private property patches are thicc with the magic
