Peyote - preserving / growing it?
    #2668322 - 05/12/04 11:38 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Gentlemen. Yes, I have succeeded in my mission. My quest for the holy cactus was completed. I drove into the desert, and found it. My wife and I cut a bunch of buttons. We now have them, but I am concerned that they will rot if I don't care for them correctly.

At this point, I've put all of them into the dirt, hoping they'll take root. (I would much rather have them growing until they're needed, but at least need them preserved.)

Any advice? Should I try to grow them, or just keep them in the freezer, or what? The shamans cut them into disks, but I imagine I should not do that until it's time to travel, right?

Thanks for the help folks.

Harvesting plants from the wild is never a good idea.It can be very detrimental to the ecosystem. It can also lead to dwindling natural populations and eventually extinction of a plant species.

If you didn't cut the cacti correctly the part left in the wild will die...  :crying: For years the numbers of lophophora williamsii in the wild have been rapidly declining in part due to the improper harvest methods of many people.

Loph seeds are readily available on the internet.

That being said, once the cut heals then you can  plant it..

Thank you for your concerns.
Let me address them:

Please realize I hold a very high respect for this plant, and the culture and spirit behind it. When the wife I found the shaman, we spent over an hour with him before he sent us out with his young ones - who showed us the proper way to take the buttons that ensure they sprout MORE buttons in the future than the ones we took. This was an old, wise man. He knew very well that this was not a frivolous "party" pursuit, but rather a quest for spiritual enlightenment. He honored my wishes and instructed me to do it right and we did. We cut it at the top, leaving the root in good shape to sprout new, and more buttons in the future. I would never disrespect or dishonor the sacred plant by raping it in a neglectful manner. Such actions are irresponsible, ignorant, and selfish.

Moving forward. I have these buttons, and it pains me to see them not in the ground, growing. I do intend to use them now, and want them to be growing until the time comes. I would love to even be able to cut a few in the future and make additional sprouts, perhaps even share with some members here - just to promote the existence of this plant.

Please aid me in my quest. I'd like to know exactly what to do and not do.

Thank you.

I've honestly never seen a cut button root before. Good luck. I would have tried grafting too.

While moving recently, a friend 'broke' one if his 2 y.o. lophs. He placed it soil, it rooted and now he has 2 for 1.

Regarding grafting: seems like a very good option. While I haven't grafted lophs yet I understand that the growth rate is excelerated by grafting to a larger cactus. There is a tremendous amount of information on the internet about grafting. Here is one from  The Vaults of Erowid

Good luck!

as much as I understand where felixhigh's coming from, what's done is done and now more than anythign the most important thing is to make sure the lophs survive grow and propagate the species......also as long as I've lived I've never seen much good from calling "the law"...especially when concernign matters they have no understanding of...there's plenty of information on the net about caring for lophs and I wouldn't be too worried about them rotting....you do however, have the responsibility and duty to make sure the species is propagated and continues on for generations...peace and much love.

Felix,I'd be more worried about your lack of respect for your fellow human being.

And frankly the law means precisely nothing so stop being a government "yes man".

Think outside the box...free thinking isn't a crime.

There's no such thing as freedom of speech so dont start with that crap. One can only move forward. The plant has already been taken and no amount of whining or complaining or disrespect will put it back where it goes.

And you cannot really say that he lacks respect for the plant even though he removed the parts of the plant from it's habitat.

freedom of speech (and thought) is something that might not exist very much in your country but that in other countries happen to exist...
and i think i can say he lacks respect for the ally, he didn't even had idea of what to do with them and probably has condemned several to death already.
see why i bitch and yell?
peace fellows...
