Australia's secret trial 1

If I knew exactly what was going on I'd tap it out, but I'm not sure exactly? What I think is happening is that in 2004 the Australian government was caught out spying on our oil and gas meal ticket close neighbour East Timor whilst negotiating how we can rip-off help develop their oil and gas industry. The Aus government appear to be misusing anti-terrorism laws to go after witness K and his barrister. Both are facing jail for ?? telling the truth? I'm not sure really?... but this sort of shitfuckery is a worry.

I'm sure the courts will sort it all out fairly and justly.

I'm glad you agree the courts are the best place to take the government on.

I was being snide, obviously. maybe a bit too. Still, kinda hard to take on the government in secret with no public accountability or oversight of any kind, isn't it? That fancy lawyer seemed pretty beaten down by the prospect.

that's ok, I'm pretty good at the snide remarks myself.
You're right about Bernard Collaery appearing beaten down. As you may know yourself, there's few things more demoralising than a police raid if you aren't used to them trashing your home. (I been raided 4 times, it's fucked ) I also agree it's not easy taking on the government, but the court is not the government, and I do have faith in them to get things right. The fact that the Australian Federal Police are using anti terrorism laws to lay charges is the worrying bit. He needs to win this and I hope he does.

Ooo Oo Bernard Collaery will be on Q & A tonight
https://www.abc.net.au/qanda/2020-22-06/12364126
Quote:
Secrets, spies and hidden trials.
How do we balance national security with your right to know?
Closed courtrooms, police raids on journalists, whistle blowers facing prison terms for sharing sensitive information. Is Australia becoming a secret state? Who should decide what we can and can’t know?
Lawyer Bernard Collaery is facing jail for revealing national secrets relating to the bugging of East Timor’s cabinet room to gain an advantage in oil and gas negotiations. A man known only as “Witness J” was jailed in the ACT for 15 months for unspecified offences after a secret trial – a case even the ACT Government knew nothing about. And News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst had her home raided by AFP officers and was threatened with charges after revealing, with the help of a whistle blower, plans by a spy agency to step up domestic spying against Australians.
Q+A is live on Monday, June 22 at 9.35pm AEST.
The host of the show Hamish McDonald was just saying the only way reporters found out about the trial was when they walked past one of the court rooms in Canberra and wondered why there were 2 security guards at the door and started chatting to them.
