How to tell if rot has spread so far that the cactus is not salvageable?

Realized today that one of my 8ft San Pedros must’ve developed for over dormant season. The base is pretty well lost, however the column doesn’t seem to be super mushy yet. The skin is definitely a dull yellow, and the flesh inside isn’t bright white, but it still feels relatively firm.

Anyone have experience saving trichs on the brink of rot? Is it likely if I cut it into pieces to dry/root that they will just turn to mush on the drying rack?

Picture is about midway through the 8ft column, it broke in two while I was moving it. I cut the top half into sections to hopefully root. Unite if the lover half is salvageable.

Looks fine to me.
Is it black or soft? That is indicative of rot.

That looks fine to me too. You will know if its rotting, it will get discolored and mushy.

I've cut off rotting tops and saved tops from rotting bases a couple times. If it gets into the core/vascular area, its more of a problem. I've had some trichs freeze and get mushy and was able to dehydrate most of the damage and use it in an extract...which turned out very well.

That lower half should callous up and start to pup within a month or so.
