Yes or no?
    #26760721 - 06/20/20 09:36 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Question. I have 6 cakes. 3 are ready to be dunked tomorrow and the other 3 need a few days to finish. My question is. Can I place ready cakes in the chamber and add the others when they become. Ready?

Absolutely..

A SGFC works best when filled to capacity with cakes, but you can use it as an ongoing chamber for any cake that is ready. Only thing is remember that the perlite won't last forever. If I'm not mistaken, about 2-3 weeks is max time before needing to change out your perlite.

It's more important to birth the cakes at the time that they're ready instead of making sure all your cakes are birthed at the same time.

100% colonization then consolidate for about 1 week. The cakes need this no matter what

Yes of course you can, secondly did you allow the recommended weeks consolidation after full colonization?

Anyway yes you can put anything in your FC at anytime you like, no big deal.

I don’t usually do the weeks consolidation if the cakes take a while to colonize though. Good luck!!!

It hasn't been a week of consolidation 2 going  on 3 days. but I did notice while the jars were colonizing it appeared to grow from the middle of the cakes bottom and out

Not true at all. You could be thinking of how long it will retain moisture without misting, but while you’re using your FC the perlite doesn’t go bad, it’s a mineral.

Unless you see pins, definitely give it the week. Or like bootedboy said, if they take a long to colonize, might not be necessary.

Not exactly sure what you mean by this. They definitely started colonizing from the point of inoculation, there's no question about that. Regardless, where they started from, consolidation is important. From my understanding, if you don't consolidate, they will just consolidate in the FC and take longer to pin. They also won't consolidate as well, so you'll likely not get as decent of a flush.

That's not what I was thinking of. I've heard that you should swap out your perlite after a bit. I recognize it's a mineral and doesn't get contaminated easily; there's no food in perlite for contams to eat. But think about having the same perlite in SGFC for 2 years. I'm sure it would be garbage by then, so there must be a point where it should be swapped out.

The mycelium grew as normal. But once it reached the bottom of the jar I noticed it growing from dead center of the bottom of the jar before it even wrapped fully around.

Just remove the perlite and wash the chamber, heck you could use the FC like a giant sieve and put a squirt of dish soap and bam, all clean, just be sure to rinse very well.

True. I stand corrected. Regardless though, perlite shouldn't just be left alone in an active SGFC for more than a month which is what I was getting at. At that point, it's definitely dirtier than what's ideal.

Doesn't sounds like anything to pay too much attention to. If the growth looks good, that's what is important

Been using the same Perlite for over ten years, no problems. You can keep Perlite moist for months without taking it out if you're lazy. Just shift the cakes a bit and dump water over the perlite (not the cakes), keep a towel under the SGFC for spillage.

You can boil your Perlite once in awhile if it matters to you, and like Bootedboy said, soap it up in the SGFC and rinse it out. Works like a charm.

Be sure not to fruit em too soon, a week long consolidation for brf cakes is more of the minimum. I would go 10 days to 2 weeks myself.
