First timer: Food of the Gods

This is my first time growing mushrooms after wanting to do this for a long time. I’ve followed Bodhi’s monotub mod. Got myself a Golden Teacher spore vial, procured some rye grain inoculation jars and away we went.
I inoculated three rye grain jars by syringe on 5/22. I didn’t aim for the edges where the grain was touching the glass, I think I will from now on. I patiently waited. Ten days went by and I had zero growth. I started to get impatient. But finally, a few days later I finally got what I was hoping for!
On 6/12 I shook all three jars.
Jar #1 was at 25% spread at time of shaking Jar#2 was at 20% Jar#3 was at 10% (Pictures were taken after shaking)

On 6/17 I had to ditch jar #2 due to contamination.

On 6/18 I birthed Jar1 and Jar3 into my mini sterilite tub with coir using the same method explained in the video. I’m using a 4ft aquarium full spectrum light. Because the top of the tub is not clear, I am lighting from the side and rotating my tub daily. I’ve taped off the bottom 3 inches to prevent side pinning.

And today (6/20) I have growth!

Thanks to all the resources available here I’m hopeful that I will have some enlightening experiences in the coming months! I appreciate you guys have done so much that I was able to learn how to tackle this little project. Fingers crossed!

Taping the bottom of the tub won’t prevent side pins.

The current theory (as I understand it) is that light has nothing to do with sidepins, and only by making preferable surface conditions at the top will you avoid it -- i.e. push down edges to make microclimates harder on the side, make the top layer level with a good amount of water beading so that the mycelium knows where to put it's fruits.
Some even put their coir slightly under field capacity, then give a casing layer a good soaking to encourage it that way.

Thank you both. There is a lot to learn.

Yep, just learned something new:

Why, because the tub is opaque?
There is no certain type of tub that "does not allow side pinning", that is just nonsense.
PE and what other such strains? More nonsense.
The substrate, no matter what tub it's in, is going to consilidate and shrink.
This means the sides of the substrate is going to get FAE, unless you use a liner.
Light does not cause side pinning, FAE does.

I don’t like the poor recovery on lots of those grains. Looks very bacterial. That doesn’t mean you won’t get a flush, but don’t bank on it.

Gotcha.
I'll temper my enthusiasm then.
I'll have to do some more research.

yeah I think there are both, a lot of mycellium and a lot of bacteria.

Sorry I'm such a beginner...
So which is which?
What are you seeing? (Just trying to learn here)
Is there anything I can do? What should I be aware of for next time?

When I threw out my contaminated jar, I definitely smelled the funk.
I haven't gotten the same thing here. Smells pretty fresh and clean actually. But thanks, I will keep my attention on it.
I think maybe I rushed the jars into the tub with the substrate. Probably could have used a few more days. Impatience is a killer in this world, as far as I can tell.
Maybe I should be casing? Bod's monotub tek seemed like he didn't need it, but maybe it is something I will do next time.
Still hoping this batch won't contaminate. Fingers crossed.

Or maybe if the one jar hadn't been thrown out, I would have three jars of spawn for the tub. Which might have been more resilient and overcome any bacteria...

you can always look for myco piss... if this happens, I've actually saved a tub by keeping the top off for a day and letting the sub dry out... then I re-hydrate it.

Bacteria only stinks if it’s rampant. I would say it often had little to no smell.

Thanks. Researching that now.
I'm not seeing any pooling or yellow discoloration. My humidity is pretty much maxed out in the tub (99% according to my hygrometer). I'm wondering if I should allow it to dry out a little bit but worried I risk more bacteria and contam.
Maybe I will just leave it. Allow it to slowly decrease humidity naturally. I'm only taking the lid off (it rests upside down, small FAE gap) a few times a day. I won't be misting until I can get a reading around 90%.
Or should I just take the lid off for a couple hours and bacteria be damned?
Of course, if my questions are ridiculous please say so. I'm feeling my way through the dark. I'm just happy to have this and other sites as a reference.
