Best way to store/keep colonized jars?
    #26759321 - 06/20/20 08:00 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I was going to spawn a couple of fully colonized jars this morning, but something came up. May not get around to it until tomorrow or Monday. What is the best way to keep and store colonized jars? And how long are they good for before you absolutely need to spawn them?

With agar, or Liquid Cultures, when I want to stall growth, I just put them in the fridge. I’ve used LC from the fridge over a year old, and it has still been sound. Cooling mycelium down basically puts it to sleep.

You’ll be more than fine putting your jars in the fridge for a few days. Handy tip though; take them out of the fridge and bring slowly to room temperature, say in the morning you are going to spawn them. So they wake up.....

Good luck

I'm not referring to agar, sorry I should of been more clear. I have a couple of fully colonized grain jars. I was planning on spawning them today, but now something has come up. I probably won't get around to it until tomorrow or the next day, so that's why I was asking what is the best way to store/keep colonized jars? Is there an absolute time period you must use them once they have fully colonized? Or can I just keep them sitting in my room at room temperature? Or do I need to store/keep them some other specific way until I spawn in the next few days?

Yeah I’ve had jars fully colonized for weeks just sitting out. Fridge is probably a good idea if you think they might be bacterial though.

Yeah they won't likely fruit unless there is a contamination if the grains. They can sit for a while fully colonized.

People, I thought it was good to consolidate fully colonized jars for as long as you can before they start to grow mushrooms in the jar??

I'm not insisting anything... I'm looking for the answer so I can do it right.

Oh wow, dude no I did not know that you can put colonized grain jars in the refrigerator like agar. So you can stall in the refrigerator like agar? And then take back out and will start colonizing again with no consequences?

I keep colonised grains jars in the fridge for months until I'm ready to use them. Just make sure that they're wrapped so other stuff doesn't spill onto the jars and make sure your fridge isn't so cold that the jars freeze.
