Why are certain types of tubs contaminated
    #26756335 - 06/19/20 05:07 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So, some of my tubs are getting contaminated during the colonization process in the tub. They do just fine when they are in the bags and smell like fresh mushrooms every time.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but the tubs with the blue latches. I've had three of them go bad in the past 3 weeks. But the other tubs that you see in one of the pictures has been doing fine. I have two of those tubs and every time I put something in one of those tubs, they colonize fine and I get two or three flushes out of each of those.

These (blue latch) tubs I bought from a vendor and do have holes at the top and I just duct taped them off because I am doing bods tek on everything, but like I said, they're not even getting white as you can see. They have been sitting for about ten or twelve days and they do not smell like fresh mushrooms either.

I'm using Coco coir and vermiculite and some gypsum.

Is that just a coincidence???  very frustrating that I've had three tubs go bad and they're all the same exact kind of tub. And different strands, etc

Probably just coincidence but if the tubs have a seal and you’re taping up the holes, you could be suffocating them whereas the other tubs without a seal are getting some kind of FAE which isn’t choking them out and making them go south.  How big are the holes in the vendor tubs?

Yeah, those tubs have a foam gasket on the lid, and Bod suggests having them always flipped in his tek, even during colonization. Maybe that's it.

Yeah it's been three tubs so far. All wasted.  Pretty sure they are 1 1/2 holes.

It's very frustrating after doing all that work.  I'm getting a second good flush after 4 and 1/2 oz on 6lbs of mycelium on one of my tubs that don't have the gasket and the other one is about to start fruiting probably before the weekend is up.  They have been colonizing fast as well.

Those tubs definitely get some extra fresh air more than those other ones. I did flip the lid probably 5 days into it because I did not see any changes. I might have been too late by then.

Yeah, I think those things do have a pretty damn good gasket seal on em.

Yes, people are always trying to come up with other variables, but failure is almost always bad spawn.

Those little spikes on certain grains in that pic confirm that.

I wouldn't be shocked if suffocating a bacterial tub might cause it to stall when it otherwise may not have. Anaerobic bacteria will certainly prefer a suffocated tub. And mush mycelium won't

I stuck my head in one of those tubs and took a big whiff and it's definitely mold and contamination. It almost knocked me on my ass. Haha. I mean I guess it could be a crazy coincidence that two of the other tubs that are the same did good and then these three other tubs did not.

I inoculated all the bags at the same time and they respond perfectly and smelled 100% like mushrooms

I'm just going to throw those tubs away and call it a loss and continue using the same kinds I've been using and I guess we will see if that is the issue in the future.

Are you shooting spores into premade grain bags? If so that’s the problem. Try using a proper method if you want control over the results.

Yeah, I used to make the quart jars a few years ago and I was using a glove box.  And now by the pre-made bags and thought hey we're doing a good job until these problems started happening.

Those bags are a coin flip at best, potential mold farms at worst. No cultivator worth their salt would ever recommend that. You will continue to see spotty results as long as you continue to use them. Basically each one is a coin toss, 50% chance of fail right off the bat.

yeah, well I already have some b+ and some golden teachers already going in two different sets of bags, so we will see what it does in the two tubs that I've had luck with. I guess I will start making my own again.  In the end, it's definitely a lot more work, but it's a lot cheaper also.  Afterall, I just mastered making DMT, so I guess another process in doing my psilocybin won't be an issue LOL.

It's not cheaper if they don't produce.

When you order pre-sterilized grain you have no control over anything like hydration level or sterilization process, and the grain is subject to who knows what conditions for who knows how long before you get it

Yes I understand that now.  And yes, in the end it's definitely way-way cheaper to go ahead and by the grains and jars again.

it was from a reputable source on here that I got them from. But I guess that doesn't mean anything sometimes LOL.

I was however getting some from a different source before and those could have been the ones that were going bad.  And they were three lb bags at that time. I did not have much success with those and they were taking way too long to colonize.

I since went with a reputable source on here and have been using one pound bags.

I still have 12 bags left and I'm going to see what they're going to do since they're already inoculated.  These bags seem pretty good just like the other ones that I got from the source and whenever I break them up, they break up really easily and feel like they are properly hydrated.
