substrate questions
    #2675844 - 05/13/04 10:56 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

What do you all think is the best substrate? Is a pressure cooker really needed to steralize 1/2 pint jars of bird seed or can I just boil them? Also, I tried searching for a dung tek, but I couldn't find one, I'm sure there must be one arround - could someone please paste a link to it?

Thanks all!

pressure cooker is a goood tool, i JUST got one not too long ago, like yesterday lol... havent used it yet, but i made 2 popcorn jars WITHOUT pressure cooking and they got infected so... im guessin pressure cooker is the best for bulk grains man... as for the BEST substrate... i have no clue, i use pf tek and it works for me lol.. (when u case, use straw, but if not, use atleast manure/compost mix... trust me, i just proved it to myself that its atleast 400% better...)

Dunk Tek... 1 second...

OH DUNG!... i use manure/compost, i buy it in the 20lb bag for like 2$ , that works VERY NICE and i dont even sterilize it... lol... so far it has givin me more than i could ask for... anyways,...

i put the verm layer on the bottom, cover that with mycelium, then i cover the mycelium with the manure/compost, then when i start to see it comin up in spots, i PATCH and then soon after (day, maybe 12 hours) i make 1 more LIGHT layer over the manure/compost.. its givin me 50+ pins so far man... u cant beat that dude, im in a 1 x 1 container.. lol.. square foot.. lol

PC is not needed, but suggested, pot/lid works fine if you do it right and its not that hard, so I suggest you save yourself the 30-60 dollars you dont have to spend on PC.
But if you do wanna spend some money, then go ahead and buy one.

Yeah I would get a pressure cooker if I had access to a stove, but right now I don't. For my fist and only grow (so far ) I used an electric tea kettle to steralize my cakes. My first grow was really really ghetto lol. I suppose I could get an electric hotplate and a pressure cooker though... That will have to wait for the next school year...

You need a PC to do grain, I even failed all 12 rye berry jars with a PC (bacterial contam), I only PCed for 60mins and did not pre-soak.

I soak for 24hrs now and PC for 90mins (quart jars), not had any problems since. Thats 90mins once upto 15psi, it take about just over 2 hours to do a batch as I let the PC cool down by itself before I open.

Call it paranoid, but an extra few mins in the PC verses, the crushing feeling of seeing your whole project go down the pan (literally), I know what I pick.
