Hey so I have been gathering everything I need to start growing and my spores come tomorrow!!!! I was wondering if this area in my closet would be a good enough area to do agar in and grains. I figured since I’m doing a bulk grow my first time I might as well do it right or as right as I can do it.

I have a SAB in a closet too. It works really well. Mines dirtier than that too.

LOL i know we tend to over think things when we first try to get into these types of things. Yes it will work. This is an area in which you will have to experiment.

All this info is overwhelming I’ve been researching for a good month lol. Everyone is anal about contamination on the forums so it makes me want to be super cautious lol. I was originally just gonna do Syringe to grain spawn, but was reading that it’s not great to do and I should just start with agar if I plan on doing that. Agar doesn’t seem that hard it just makes me nervous with all the worrying with contamination. So here we are with a SAB in my closet.

Closet is fine for SAB work. A SAB should work almost everywhere indoors. I use mine in my bedroom and often have windows open and AC running. Its rare for me to get a plate contam from the box alone.
Grain will be totally fine in there too. Hell, if its grain jars Im knocking up with a syringe I dont even bother working in a SAB, I do that shit right on my coffee table or even on the floor while I sit on my couch. Its pretty low risk.

You've done spore syringes to grain with the lid off in your bedroom?

Why would you take the lid off? I use injection ports in my lids.
I do usually drop clone tissue onto plates on my supply rack tho, no SAB.
If youre just starting tho, its probably best to do your stuff in a SAB until you get your procedures down.

I've read about people skipping the SHIPS when they use a SAB and just take the lid off to inject. I did plan on using injection ports as well I just didn't know if you just took the lid off.

Nah, I use syringe filters or tyvek for GE filters and SHIPS or RTV silicone for injection ports.

Alrighty! What's your opinion on polyfill? I did buy a bag already lol. Also, do you think I'll have a good chance with just inoculating with syringe and just skip agar for my first time? I plan on using whole oats as my spawn grain.

I use polyfil for my tubs, wouldnt use it for my jars personally, but a bunch of people do. Ive noticed tho that some people using polyfil lids have problems with the top layer of grain drying out and not colonizing. Ive never had that problem with syringe filters or tyvek, even when I used jars that were sterilized week or a month + before inoculating.
I use syringes often. Ive used dozens of bought syringes over the years and only once had one that was "bad", and it just never started colonizing. Never had a contam. Its just where you buy them from. Ive used the same place every time.

You could get some from certain types of postal envelopes, or at a hardware store as tyvek painters suits or sleeves.

Polyfil works wonderfully if you get it stuffed in to the right tightness

Do you just cut the material up and use that as the filter. Ex Tyvek Coveralls

Yup. Use some hi-temp silicone to seal it onto the hole in the lid.

I believe all regular silicone is perfectly acceptable at SAB temps. I think that's what a lot of people use these days

I feel so much better now that I don't have to do agar right away. Thank you for all this info.
