I've spent about 15 hours looking around the Newcastle area this week. Lots of lookalikes and other types everywhere I go but no subs. Is anyone finding subs in the Newcastle area at the moment?

hey guys.... question regarding winter subs. i know that they require x amount of rainfall, and certain temperatures, which are usually optimal around the beginning of winter and then get too cold to fruit during the middle of winter. but as winter comes to a close in august and the temps start to resemble the beginning of winter again, is it likely for subs to fruit a few more times?? ive only ever picked at the start of winter, as my spot is quite far away to drive, but just wondering if anyone has any experience with subs fruiting towards the end of winter. much love yall

English subaeruginosa newbie here! Didnt think my first proper post would be here in Aus but here we are...
Have always loved hunting down liberty caps back home in the UK (as well as growing Cubensis mushrooms when the season isn't in swing) so was really looking forward to having a go trying to find some of what australia has to offer! after learning as much as i could from info found here on shroomery() i decided to venture out. maybe a total of 10h driving in the last month or so specifically looking for subs. even went on a jog yesterday morning at one of the national parks in sydney trying to eagle eye as much hopeful habitat as possible but with no luck. Apart from a shroom i was convinced was too big to be a sub. well i went back this morning to double check the big fella and what do you know... Still not a sub. but after having a proper look around the area i then stumbled across the motherload(of what im hoping are subs). this was about 30 mins of collecting. i wouldve taken some action shots of the bad boys in their natural habitat but was in the bush right by some houses so was trying to be as incognito as possible...
have attached the best pics i could get back at my house so sorry for the lack of natural lighting. if any of you lovely folk could let us know if i actually just found what i think i did that would be amazing!!
Found in a mixture of long grass and ferns underneath mostly eucalyptus on a sloping hillside.

p.s. I can assure you, those blue ones were not blue to begin with...

LOVE.

Hey dude, those are not Subs, post a request for ID separately so a TI can do their thing.
You can see the rusty brown spore deposits on one of your photos(Pic #3). Most likely Cortinarius Sp.
Potentially poisonous.

You're looking for something with a more caramel cap in colour. Depositing a dark purple spore print.

Good luck.

Hey all, I'm a newbie here from the hunter. I have done a lot of research on this site, kept track of this thread for a long time, watched the 2 videos that show where to locate subs and spent A LOT of time searching. I have been to 3 National parks, one of which I went to twice, local parks, pine plantations, and still cannot locate a thing. A lot of similar crops but nothing turns blue when picked making me question them, and the rule of thumb most people are sticking by is that when in doubt, not to risk it. Am I missing something? I have noticed that this thread has lost its pace in the recent weeks but given the recent rain I had expected this page to explode, I am now thinking I have missed the boat.  fmxfan11 mentions the season may be over but I haven't seen anyone reply to his comments. The current path I am walking isnt working so can someone with more experience point me in a better direction or shed some light on the current situation?

What’s the NSW etiquette on wild patches in public areas?
This is my first winter season and I’ve been searching 2hours from home.
It’s important to me to be a responsible, sustainable, and fair forager.

So I found a patch last week. It’s situated in a public reserve.
I found it on a Monday. I picked about 50% (100grams wet) and left some for the community.
Did as much flicking as I could to spread spores. Tried to minimise the amount of disruption to the mycelium as possible, although wasn’t using scissors so did the best I could.

Anyways, after putting a post somewhere else I was advised it’s a good idea to learn about your patch and that a follow up visit was a good idea to see how it was progressing.
I also figured, that if it was a “well known” spot, waiting 5 days would be good form to give others a chance to pick a few.

So upon returning this morning. The patch had sprouted more fruit after a bit of rain midweek.
I picked 120g wet, leaving the really young pins behind to grow and release spores.

Questions: What can I do to help maintain the health of this patch so that it’s there for years to come. Should I be putting some fresh woodchips on or anything like that?

Have I breached any etiquette with my current actions.

I also found this little patch just around the corner. Left all of the pictured ones there to grow seeing I had a decent load already.

Thanks for the kind words.
When I go fishing, I only take enough for a feed and then practice catch and release, so I figured foraging should be the same.

Might head up there in the summer time and drop some wood chips on the patch and give it a squirt of water. The area is looked after by bushcare and council maintenance. I was there to witness the guy on the ride on. I hope they don’t prune the trees or anything as the tree branches stop the ride on mower from getting in too deep. The grass covered a lot of the patch so when I went back this morning, I had to spend more time moving grass out of the way to uncover more medicine.
Found some beautiful pairs, triplets, quads and a family of 5.
I was over the moon.

I’m feeling pretty fortunate having such good luck in my first season, I’d like to keep the karma good.

Looking forward to cube season so I can head up north on a surf trip.

Peace

Thanks man. The choices we make today will impact the world tomorrow.
Only taking what you need from life and living within ones means is a great way to go about that.

Honestly i would think about setting up a patch for next year in a place you know won't get destroyed by council. If you don't have a back yard then at least an off the track spot. Keep you stems and make a cardboard tek that can grow and then noc up a bag of woodchips. Get it fully colonised then create the bed and let nature take over.

If i could rate you twice you would get another five :mushroom2:

I’ve been trying to get a planter box going in the small backyard we have in the unit block. It’s in an area in the backyard that is almost always in shade.
I picked up a few bags of pine wood chips from a forest I found some subs in about a month ago.
A lot of the subs I’ve been finding in the forest have been growing out of wombat/kangaroo poo. So I bagged some of the dung/chips the subs came out of and put them in the planter box in between the soil and woodchip layer.
The second time I found some I’d just read about the cardboard tek. I used a few roots and stems from some mushies and put it all in a Tupperware container for a few days. It seemed to be going ok, but I’m not sure whether it was mould or mycelium.  I think the cardboard may have been too wet as it didn’t seem to work very well. In the end, I just put the contents of the container into one corner of the planter box to see if it will start colonising.
Every time I’ve found a mushie, I’ve snipped off the bottom and thrown in in the box.

The biggest limiting factor is that I’m only a few hundred metres from the coast and it’s unlikely the climate is correct for an outdoor grow. I’ve seen some other non active species grow in our front yard and the neighbours, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Worth a crack though.

Cool man. Keep a photo journal of the planter box and good luck.
As for being coastal I'm unsure about how long conditions will be good for. Maybe you will have a shorter season compared to inland. Maybe it won't be frosty so you may get fruits all winter? Either way it's a great experiment.

Hi,thanks for your replies, what I get out of it is that the climate is right I just need to keep looking, am I wrong? Any tips or tricks to help me out and save some time as well would go a long way, I just need some guidance from the regulars. So for a frustrated newbie in the hunter valley, if you could share some tips, tricks, guidance on the current climate and where to look to improve my odds this would go a long way, I don't want to know your current harvesting locations, I just hope a little help isn't out of the question?
