Still having trouble finding best way to dry WBS and best “dryness.”

So ive had pretty much nothing but sucess so far. The one thing Ive hd trouble with is the best way to dry bulk amount of WBS inside, and how dry to get themS ive always read that you should be able to stick your hand in the WBS, wnd none should stick to your hand. Is this true? Its always worked but it seems like after the PC, they seem kind of dry... look a little dry atleast.
I normally just stick them on like the top of a big storage tote, and put a fan on them And occasionally flip them. Thoughts?

It depends how you prep them if they should be dry before loading into jars or not. I've been using Fooman's WBS prep https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8508523
And the only difference is I rinse them before putting them in the boiling water as well. I've found that with rinsing them first, doing the 20 min, then loading them after a 2-3 minute strain to the big water out they come out perfect. I've been using the Pennington Classic wild bird feed.
It's cool not having to dry them. When i did i just put them on as many flat things as i could and shuffled them like to said, big tupperware and baking pans. I had a nice frame with screen for drying grains when i had more space but it was a pain to use inside. If you try the fooman method with a couple jars i think you'll like it.
The grains should seem mostly dry after the PC, and after a little bit you'll see some little wet spots where the grains touch the jar, shake, and by the next day that should be gone and they seem mostly dry again but you should see some barely burst grains mixed in and you'll know they're hydrated.

Agreed, Fooman. Why fuck around with soaking, cooking, simmering, drying when you can have it done in less than an hour? I take it a step further by skipping the first (moisture distribution) shake. I don't shake til 30%, still a winner.

I know the Fooman tek, I think I tried it for a grow I cant remember. It works then huh? Why do people take the time to do it the other way that requires alot more work? (Not being sarcastic, Im pissed about wasting my time.) I probably shoulve taken Fooman more seriously.

My bird seed has been dry enough where I stick my hand in it, and barely any of it sticks to my hand. Many that is unnecessary and potentially harmful.

1) Go to Tractor Supply Co. 2) buy a 50 pound bag of whole oats for $15 3) use them 4) be amazed at how superior they are (and cheaper) than wbs 5) thank me
Oats dry so easily and they hydrate without bursting and they're dirt cheap. I started off with wbs too but if you can get oats... do it!!!

Oats were my grain before, I liked them and im sure you could use the same/similar prep method but I think i prefer birdseed to oats now. I get a 40lb bag for $12-15 which is standard grain spawn pricing. The best thing about WBS is the shitload of inoculation points. 3x oats.
The only benefit i saw in oats was that they smelled delicious to me when i PC them.
And Cat, I dont know why people still use other methods of prep lol. Maybe they just dont know about this one yet or maybe they did it incorrectly some time and it didn't work out well. It's too easy.

I’ve only ever used wbs and did the 12-20 hour soak, strain it or spread it out and let it sit for an hour then load.
Lately I’ve been trying no prep and it’s awesome. The myc seems to love the stuff that normally gets washed out. It’s been significantly faster colonization and the myc gets this nice velvety look that doesn’t come across in pictures.

I’ve been filling the quart up with wbs to the 400 line then adding half a pint of water and that’s it. You do need to shake the jars ASAP when they’re done though or it’ll dry into a big clump.

Both. Those first two are wedges.
This was one of the first times I tried no prep. It was Wg lc that finished the jar in 5 days.

A wedge pre shake

I'll have to try it then next time, I'm always down for even easier. Are you measuring your water in a qt jar or measuring cup?

I think it comes out go around 2 part seeds 1 part water.
My quarts have measurement lines on them so I fill them up with seeds to the 400 mark and then fill a half pint jar with water and pour it in.
