Is your blower housing only slightly larger than the blower itself? Many blowers are not sealed on the motor side, and will pull inlet air on both sides of the squirrel cage. The air pulled in past the motor cools the motor. If the back side of your box is close to the blower, all the air is going through that hole and directly to the squirrel cage. None of it is circulating past the motor to cool it. Either build a bigger box to house the blowe, and use a bigger hole with a pre filter, or just take the box off all together and don’t run a prefilter(that may not be possible with a blower oversized for your hepa).

Okay great, i think you hit the nail on the head. It never occurred to me that it intakes from both sides, and that makes a ton of sense having that air be what cools the motor. Sucks to have to rebuild the box but at least i know whats wrong now. Thank you so much!

Yes that is a good point which would be alleviated if you rebuild the prefilter box for a 3 sq foot filter and use the top of the box for the filter holder instead of the friggin side lol. SWhy did you go with the side you cant even access the blower wiring.

It never occurred to me it would intake air from both sides. I dont know why. And i didnt make the hole on the wiring side because 1. i didnt need to mess with the wiring and couldnt imagine why id need to and 2. thought it only pulled air from the opposite side. Ill rebuild the box bigger and put the filter on top. Thanks for your help!

It's your blower sitting on a filter? Than your plugging your output air before it goes into the plenum. If you make a prefilter put it outside the squirl cage not outside the air output. That's why it is heating up and tripping the thermal protection. It's plugged up.

Nope I can't, that is why I asked. Looks like exposed filter media and it looks like your blower is sitting on top of it.

Just to update the thread for anyone looking in the future, i took off the top of the blower box and that allowed enough airflow for it to run for at least 30-45 min (the time i needed) so i assume it fixed the problem entirely. remember to allow air intake from both sides of your blower lol, especially around the mower to cool it!
