Why so big?? Taranaki, New Zealand

Just curios what factors might go into one spot I check that has really thick stemmed, thick capped mushrooms but only a couple of hundred meters away they're just your standard subs? I'm assuming they're still subs as the general consensus seems to be that's that's all we get here, these are a lighter colour, almost yellowish/caramel and can be quite twisted rather than just growing nice and straight. Can't really get a pic that's give justice to the thickness (story of my life) but you can see how much one of them weighs. Thanks, like I said, just curios. Growing in mulch. Cheers.

Size, shape and weight varies quite a lot with many species of mushrooms, with the genus Psilocybe being no exception.
The reasons for this are possibly complex, but I'd believe microclimate is one important factor, genetics likely another.
I find that mushrooms growing in hollows are more likely to grow huge, which I believe is due to a more constant high humidity
than in more open spaces. You have possibly noticed that the subs growing in tall grass are likely to get taller themselves, while
those growing in wood chips often are shorter.

You can see in my sig, i find some very very fat ovoids. Typically i would say the biggest factor that allows this is genetics. The weather and habitat also play a big role. There is alot of variation in wild mushrooms. At tge end of the season when it gets hot the mushroom tend to be much larger and more dense because they suck up as much water as they can.

Cheers for the replies. Yeah these ones aren't in a hollow at all, actually they couldn't be more exposed. One thing's for sure though, they definitely did some bluing overnight. Might have to keep these ones seperate to sample.

Just a question relating to the blueing from an expert like you Angler. Would the said mushrooms be stronger if you ate them before the intense bruising you see above?

The bluing is the drugs degrading do yes there will be potency loss. It is best to harvest at peak ripeness and dry as soon as possible to minimize this.
