MacMerdin's Simpe Pan-Cakes Question (for P. Bisporus)
    #26753371 - 06/18/20 04:47 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

This seems to be a popular method, but I'm not seeing an explanation as to why it works so well. Can anyone explain the purpose of burying the jars? Isn't that just cutting down on fruiting surface area compared to regular cakes?

Is there something specific about Panaeolus/Copelandia varieties that benefit from this or would suffer from growing from cakes? And would crumbling/shredding the cakes to use as spawn (like many do for cubes) be a bad idea for these strains?

Guessing people do it this specific way for a reason, just wondering what that reason is! Any insight much appreciated, thanks!

1. Its what worked for him

2. Find out

3. Because someone else did it and it worked and most people are too afraid to be the pioneers

When they’re being grown straight outta the jar, the only surface area is the top so It doesn’t matter whether the jars are buried or not. You’re not covering up the bottom/sides of the substrate by burying it, because they’re already covered up by the jar. He doesn’t birth the cakes like you do with the PF tek, what he’s doing is called “Top fruiting”

The reason the cakes are buried (if I remember correctly) is to get the surface of the substrate (top of the jar) as close to the perlite as possible to help keep the casing layer moist which is essential for Panaeolus actives.

If you’re wanting to shred your cakes to spawn to bulk, just start with grains. I use Wild bird seed. Others use Rye Berries, millet, etc. but doing this means you’re straying from MacMerdins tek so you should find another tek to follow if you want to spawn to bulk.  Pans are very different from cubes. If you’re serious about growing them, I’d recommend reading through the official Panaeolus/copelandia thread. Or at the very least, check out the two links in Asura’s signature about growing Pans. He’s condensed it down into a short, easy to digest read that will give you most of what you need to know.

Pans are tricky compared to cubes. I studied and researched for months before I attempted to grow them.

If you’re wanting to do MacMerdins pan cakes, do it just like he does. If you wanna start changing things on your first try following his tek, the most I would do is substitute straight Hpoo for the bagged shit. Other than that, do it just like he does for your first try. Once you get that right, then you can start making tweaks if you feel the need.
