Boletes in Georgia - Edulis or Tylopilus - and another....

Found these this evening growing in grass underneath oak and dogwood trees. One looks like a king bolete (or closely related type). The other I'm not sure. It's not bitter though.

Good luck with that. I've been dying to chow down on Boletes for over two decades, but nobody can ever Identify them, so I never get to eat them

I take that back, I used to have some huge ones that grew under my live oak tress when I lived in Florida. This is the only one that I actually got identified and they were choice

I have eaten the first before. I claimed it to be Edulis and then A. Rockefeller told me it was probably Tylopilus. I sure did enjoy it. Choice edible in my opinion.
The second type I've here. I am not sure. I have a few of them. They do not taste bitter when I pinch a little off to test on my tongue.

I'm not well versed with boletes in Georgia, but it looks like something in the B. edulis group.
Could B. separans be an option, at least for the first one?

You could try a spore print, too.

From what I understand, and this does not apply to most mushrooms, if they taste bitter or spicy they're inedible but if they taste mild they're edible. I ate some last year that resembled the edulis complex but were probably tylopilus and they were surprisingly good. No real flavor but very meaty and very umami.

That's how we treat boletes as well. I've had this Edulis (or Tylopilus) before and it was amazing. I'll cook up both types here and compare.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Tylopilus species have a white reticulum like these.
In any case, there are apparently a number of edible Tylopilus species, although I never tried them as the only one known to grow in my country is the oh-so-bitter T. felleus. Luckily they are much less numerous than B. edulis.
