Mexico * 2
    #26752242 - 06/17/20 05:20 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Was wondering how well white boys who don't speak a lick of Spanish do going into Mexico on their own. I had one guy say he's been living in Mexico City two years and never has any trouble. Another homeboy of mine, big black dude, took the bus and stayed a couple weeks.  Guess my biggest fear, living in Texas and all, is the border. Supposedly alot of crime and stuff with the drug smuggling thing. If like to be able to drive into Mexico and possibly all the way to Costa Rica or Panama one day. I got family in Costa Rica, so I always thought it be cool to drive that way

Well that would be one hell of an adventure, freddy. That would be one for the books, man. One you'd remember for a lifetime.

If I recall right Panama is as far as you can go before you reach the Dorian Gap, which would effectively prevent you from going any further via roads.

There's no doubt that it would be a highly sketchy drive. And this ain't no xenophobia shit either. Fact is a gringo driving nearly 3,000 miles through all of Mexico and to Costa Rica/Panama (if you actually tried going that far)...it would never get boring, that's for sure.

Really depends on where you go. I'm no fan of Mexico. In Colombia/Venezuela/Argentina/Peru/Paraguay/Uruguay/Brazil/Panama/Dominican Republic, I was treated like any other person. People would call me a gringo and I adopted the title but I was treated normally. In Mexico, I found that that wasn't the case. Maybe the proximity to the US and heavy tourism makes them shitty, but when I was in Mexico, my mood really soured. I was defined as a gringo above anything else. Nevermind the fact that I had just lived in Colombia for 6 months directly prior, people would act like I didn't speak Spanish just because I'm gringo. Very frustrating experience.

In any case though, I would be on guard but you'll probably be fine. My Portuguese when I went to Brazil was literally 2 days of Youtube videos and I was fine in practically every part of the country.

Tourists drive thru/visit Mexico all the time! U dont have to worry, well except passing thru the boarder towns is sketchy as hell. But really, the only really bad part of Mexico is the boarder. Everywhere else is pretty cool. My favorite is Yucatan and Puerto Vallerta.

Also because of tourism, many locals speak English but u should definitely learn Spanish thou.

Research where you're going well, shit's been getting more and more dangerous lately. A friend who worked for the government recommended against me doing something similar to what you're suggesting and told me about a case he worked on where a couple guys from Europe were "disappeared". I don't say this to drive fear into you, the buses and tourist areas and cities are mostly safe, it's the roads you don't know and traveling after dark you should be worried about.

Last time I stayed at a hostel I overheard this American tell a story where he was stopped for having a pickup truck and after some questioning he was left to walk for hours to the nearest gas station where he had to borrow a phone, since they'd also taken his phone and wallet. After some of the stories I've heard, he's lucky he got away with his life.

What I'm saying is, do it, have a good time, just don't drive long distances and research where you're going. Spanish is definitely an asset too.

What Darwin says is true too, we Mexicans are a racist bunch even though we don't like to admit it. A lot of the times it means you'll be treated favorably too, people might be nicer to you than they would be to a less light-skinned person or be more willing to help you out, but it also means you'll be a prime target at tourist traps. Once my brother was offered a novelty skull at a tourist trap for 500 dollars, and after saying a few words in Spanish the price was lowered to 500 pesos

I’ve spent a few weeks in Tampico, Mexico. My wife is Mexican so we go visit every year. It’s pretty sketchy. It’s not a tourist spot at all. Lots of military rolls around. It’s always sketchy when you get off the plane and are greeted my military with M16s. The city was run down but people are friendly. It’s odd to see abandoned sky scrapers. The military hangs out in them so the cartel doesn’t. Definitely  learn spanish or you will be taken advantage of.

Ironically, i feel safer with the Mexican Military aka the Federalés checkpoints. I feel like they are somewhat trustworthy and do seem to keep the cartels away.

I've heard of a couple stories like that too. Nowadays it's more likely that the army will stop the bus and randomly search bags. But I've heard of fake army checkpoints where it's actually cartel impersonating military or police and they expect a bribe to let you go through safely. The quantity they ask for supposedly varies depending on how rich you look.

With the current president militarizing the federal police I feel uneasy with military convoys rolling around town at all hours of the day.

Yea it was cool and kind of scary to see lol. I also saw military painting fences in parks. You know that there is a guy at a stand at the bathrooms at public parks that makes you pay to use the restroom? Lol he literally sits at a fold out table all day demanding money so you can piss.

Also every single house sells something on their doorstep. It’s pretty cool actually. You can walk down the street and eat a 3 course meal and desert in your own neighborhood.

That's pretty white for mexican standards. Just dress how the locals dress if you don't want to stand out that much. You'll get stares if it's a non tourist town, but you'll get used to it. Other than that you should be fine.

Fuck that indeed! They also have fake uber eats motorcycles they use to deliver drugs!

Ugh, I hate that I have to pay to piss in most public places. Pro-tip though, when the guy at the gas station tells you the bathroom is for customers only, ask him if you could give him a tip to let you in, 5 pesos should be enough.

I speak pigeon Spanish, but I'm not gonna act like I'm fluent or try speaking in Spanish. And I would love to learn. I feel the best way is to submerge myself in a place and culture where it's spoken. And if I could get over my dear of driving thru the Mexican border, I no doubt wouldn't hesitate to drive all the way to Panama. I just want to be safe.

I won't go to any third world country. First world only. I've heard from a lot of people that say it's safe and stuff, but I've also read a lot about people who died. I'm not one for taking that kind of risk. I'd much rather stick to the nice safe first world countries. No Mexico, no south America, nothing like that. There are enough nice first world countries to visit anyway.

What I could use is a buddy whose fluent To ride with. A Mexicana or homeboy or something. It's just not alota people are down to go that deep or too broke to travel like that.  If I went, I'd cross at Laredo or Brownsville I think. There's also a small crossing at big bend park but no cars can get thru. It's all walking or riding a donkey and you cross the river by canoe or wading. That's really only good for a day trip thou

All depends on where you go and how much Spanish you know and how intelligent you are.  I love Mexico & the people.  If you go do your homework, as should be done with anyone traveling to another country.  Good luck.

I would say the driving all the way to Panama is a bit sketchy. Not just parts of Mexico but also Nicaragua and Honduras, which are more third world than Mexico (Mexico is like 2nd World).

But yeah, bring a friend. Would be a better choice.

C'mon man, Mexico isn't third world, we have socialized medicine and we're also a part of north America. I don't know why everyone thinks is south or central America. That being said, I get your worries, most of the danger is in smaller towns and roads, bigger cities and traveling by bus is safe.

One good analogy I heard for describing the danger throughout Mexico, is that Mexico is about as big as Europe.

You'd be kind of naive to say you shouldn't go to France because someone you know got killed in Bulgaria.

Also heard a story about someone who came back from a successful trip through Mexico, only to get mugged at gun point in their own 1st world country

People who think it’s third world haven’t seen much of Mexico , maybe little bits of a single state or two.  There are deluxe elite areas and swanky places all over.  But there’s also your average middle class places and lesser income places.  I love Mexico.  Especially the community vibes where everyone can hang out and ya can get invited to random dinner and drinks or hang outs or ask someone out that you barely know.  It’s different in the states.  Lacking in that department where I’m at currently.

United States has some utter shit holes too, in many states - gangs, drugs, homeless, rednecks dilapidated infrastructure, racism, ruthless police, corrupt politicians, the whole shebang .

It’s all in where you go.

I wanna go thru Panama to Colombia. I read stories about crossing the Darien thru all sorts of sketchy ways

I think as long as you don't look like a rich tourist you're good to go.
