    #26751905 - 06/17/20 02:57 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

After dehydrating and storing your cracker dry shrooms in mason jars, do you guys you silica gel desiccant packets or oxygen absorber packets? Or do you need both?

Or is one better or preferred more than the other?

I use desiccant packets to store in jars or sealed mylar bags. I tried oxygen packets once but I think I left them out too long while I bagged things up cause they didn't seem to do anything.

I bought a big bottle of color indicating silica gel and make my own packets by cutting out pieces of a paper grocery bag and folding it into a pouch then taping it just a bit so it is sure not to spill. I can't see the color change but I also put like 3+ ounces of silica in them so I don't really have to worry about them much.

Which kind is that of the color changing silica gel? Do you order it off Amazon?

I just use bassic 2 gram desiccant packets from Amazon. Packaging is good grade. Meaning it's marked with do not eat or whatever. I think 50 2 gram packets were like 1.99 on amazon. The color changing ones are cool but more expensive. They sell the color indicator ones already in packets also.

Appreciate that Gizmo, looking into it. I had read some people advising oxygen absorber packets so there is no type of break down, but I always assumed desiccant packets was all you really need.

I like storing cracker dry in mason jars, don't have a food saver or sealer to be vacuum sealing. You can keep them cracker dry in mason jars with desiccant packs for years correct?

I store sometimes In mason jars.
I don't use desiccant.

Load up your jar with the cracker dry shrooms.
Point a hair dryer into the jar for thirty seconds.
place seal lid and ring on mason jar.
You'll have a nice vacuum on your jar for year or more.
The sealed lid will pop off with your fingers when time to open.

I have had them last over a year without loss of vacuum.

Make sure you put the lid on while still hot inside the jar..

I've heard of dry canning using a oven. Never tried it myself but essentially is the same thing as micelio is talking about if I am understanding him correctly. Using dry heat fr a hair dryer to heat up the jar and make a vacuum seal.
