Got my First PC! Need some recommendations * 1
    #26741100 - 06/13/20 05:50 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

My first PC just arrived!

After spending some time shopping around, it quickly became clear that finding a 15psi PC big enough to fit more than pocket change in here in the UK was going to be no mean feat, So I had to compromise. I bought a 10L Taurus: It didn't specify the psi, and when it arrived it sits at just under 8psi.
I did initially buy a 15psi 6L but wasn't happy, then replaced it with an 8L 13psi but was not happy with the quality, so ordered a new one from a new brand.

As 15 seems to be the recommended psi, what would you recommend for a 8psi? Obviously it will take longer, but how much do you think I should add on? I was thinking of getting some autoclave strips so I can test it and get a better idea (so would love some thoughts on those too if you've got any experience).

Also, the PC doesn't come with any accessories, so what do you guys use? I was looking at cake drying racks to put inside. I figured something two tiered would be good, so I can utilise the space when I need to.

And any other tips?

Thanks!

i just quickly looked at the ebay UK and it sucks you can't get a hold of the 22L presto cooker, really is a pretty solid item for the price. I also have a few autoclaves my work was going to get rid of, so I am fairly spoiled. You may have luck finding some healthcare/biopharma facilities getting rid of autoclaves (sometimes for free).. anyway, depending on what you are sterilizing, you will need 2-3 hours at 8PSI. I would send everything back that you bought and try to get something that goes to 15PSI.

:whathesaid:

Except...PC in the UK and EU are set to 12PSI once you get a PC weigh the weight and divide by 12, times this by 3 and use some coins equal to this weight to add to the top of the jiggle weight. This will bring your PC pressure up by 3psi to 15psi, only issue you may have is any safety plug may blow before reaching 15psi just use a bit less weight till it doesn't. PC will not blow up as they are tested to a far higher pressure than 15psi!

SQ professional use to do a 18L PC and holds 7x 1L jars which is what i started with before getting the Presto 23Q from the states. As to two tiered just stack things on top of each other as long as you have trivet in bottom its all good. If your talking 2 tiers it must be a big assed PC! Any pics.

Ah crap, okay i'll send it back. No Idea why its such a challenging find a suitable PC here! I guess they just not as common place in British kitchens.
Likewise I looked for a presto. I found the odd one in the states, with a levy of $100 for shipping, which i'm certainly not keen on!
How many autoclaves do you have? And would you be willing to sell one? (That also depends where you're based, and on the assumption you're based in the UK at least).
I actually bought a 6L Prestige to begin with, but felt it was too small so sent it back. I then bought a 8L Prestige, which is only 12psi (but was disappointed with the quality; the lid doesn't sit on right, so I know it will be a waste of time).

What do you think to something like this: 12L Pressure Steam Sterilizer Autoclave

Thanks for the tips! I just called SQ after reading your message; just waiting to hear back about what pressure their cookers operate at. Do you happen to know? Do you remember what pressure your SQ operated at?

Cool, I won't bother faffing with the two tiered thing, sounds like its unnecessary!

All UK PC are set to 12psi, check your manual when it turns up and if you need to increase psi to 15 follow the tip in previous post:wink:

Cheers for all your help.

I got a message from the autoclave manufacturer telling me its out of stock and won't be in stock for a while! (on account of the current situation).

That other PC also arrived and it was 8psi. I'd intended to send it back having decided to buy an autoclave before it arrived.

Honestly you should really get a 15psi and might as well spend 80 and get a mirro or presta 23qt.

I always PC at 15psi for 90 min.

You don't want a lower temperature which is what lower psi means. I guess you could tape a weight to the weight.

What about these?

Large, no toggle weight noise. Can be plugged into a timer for convenience. Relatively cheap compared to importing an All American canner or presto.

Alternatively look at prestos via Amazon.
There is a brand called Buffalo that do larger sizes with optional pressure gauges but i am struggling to find a supplier but theyre lovely looking units.
Lastly there is a brand called Hawkins and they do these they're huge, 15psi and readily available. The only caveat is no visual gauge just a rocker. But hey that's ok. I used a rocker no gauge for ten years.

I hope this is helpful and gives you a few options you might not have known about.

I can't remember the details exactly but 30psi will achieve the same as 15psi but in about three minutes instead of 15. Just to give you an idea of scale. Definitely get a 15psi or higher unit. You'll be there all day otherwise and thats not efficient. If anyone has steam pressure / sterilising times data to share that would be illuminating.

Oh one final point. It's worth having a small Pc just for agar bottles, petris, and other bits and pieces you wanna sterilize. Maybe a small 8l would be useful for that. Something like a Prestige HI dome. They're 15psi and big enough for a bottle of agar and three stacks of petris.

That way your not running a huge pc just for a bit of agar. Save the whales and all that. :hippie:

There's loads of options. This is 1 bar so 15psi. Three phase might be something you'll need a transformer for but that's easy.

Hey lefty,
cheers for your input. Yeah I'd love a presto but the only ones i've found have excessive shipping. I'm not too sure about adding weight to a, for example, 12psi; whilst it may be okay, if shit goes wrong I won't be covered.

Kimble,
That's pretty much the one that I bought that I got an email to say it was out of stock. It was a 12L portable like that, though it was half the price and from a different supplier. If it comes down to it I think i'll have to bite the bullet and go for that one.

Presto: I've had little luck finding a supplier, and Amazon uk only seems to sell parts. Shipping form the US means and additional $100 in many cases (thats on ebay.com).

Buffalo: Not sure if I've come across them, but then again I've seen so many now! They do like rather lovely and silky. Without a UK source though probably looking at a huge shipping levy again.

Hawkins: Yes! I saw these before, and stupidly I din't click on more info. I saw so many different pressure cookers, that when it wasn't clear what the psi was I looked elsewhere. Its actually a good sign that the large one is 15psi, as I feel this is a good indicator that the smaller ones may be too (the 8 litre certainly is!). I'm not sure i'd do 22 litres, but the price point for these is good!
With such little experience, whilst a dial would be nice, I don't think its essential at the moment.

Presitge: Funny enough I bought the 8L but sent it back because the quality sucked. The lid didn't sit on securely. I did a dig around and it turned out it was a commom problem!

Yes, very helpful, thank you for all of the information! I'm sure the answer is in there somewhere

I'll keep you all posted!
