fmri imaging experiments are operating on the slow level of metabolism. It's longer than 30 minutes/picture - not the rapid flux and interplay of experiencing in real time.
We need some new high resolution picture accumulation at least one 3-d image every 1/15 th of a second, as the contents of the mind are swiftly unfolding or sparkling making significant connections at that rate.
And we want those picture to be about electrical field activity so each 3-d pixel should have a fairly accurate depiction of electrical field energy as it animates over the crenelated surface of the cerebral cortex.
3-d movies of experimentally organized thinking (normal and entheogenized) would help a lot towards developing a vocabulary of experiencing.

Actually the time resolution is much faster than that IIRC, for some glucose metabolization studies - on the order of a few minutes. But the glucose rates are used as a proxy for neural activity, which complicates interpretation. Detail is improving anyway.
FWIW the scanning you suggest doesn't exist - but that doesn't prevent me from using it in a book I'm working on where the protagonist is having their auditory processing monitored in what amounts to high fidelity.

The survey is only meant as background quantitative data to complement qualitative interviews which will try to expand more on the nuance and context of psychedelics within the limits of my aims. I plan to use the survey also as a recruitment tool for people to participate in face-to-face interviews (in person or video calling), all confidential of course. I've not mingled deeply in the psychedelic community at large even though I have used them plenty over the years. This is my foray into the deeper belief systems and practices of psychedelic users (with obvious limitations). Thanks for all the feedback so far it is quite helpful.

I haven't tried 5 dried grams of mushrooms before, it's something I will likely do at some point in the future. This is mostly because I haven't had access to shrooms. I'm a shroom novice for sure. The most I have taken is 3 tabs of acid (which i assume was around 300ug) and about 100ml of Ayahuasca in one go, which doesn't really mean much as mixtures differ a lot in potency. However this comes from a batch I've had for about four years now and it gets pretty intense over about 80ml. Overall I have probably tripped close to 100 times (mostly on Ayahuasca as I have a personal supply that's lasted me years). Not sure where this places me in terms of experience but I'm coming in with a decent amount of experience and this is what has driven my interest. This isn't purely academic but it fits in well with my field of study at university and provides me with more motivation to delve deeper into the psychedelic community.

Wonderful. If you get into cultivating might I recommend the APE (Albinos Penis Envy) strain variety ? As far as cubes go they are as easy to grow as any cube - but much more potent than your average cube. 5 dried grams of those magical little APE’s brewed into a tea and drank changed how I viewed psychedelics & normal everyday day to day life in the phenomenological world. And that was after already having years of experience with various psychedelic substances. I wanted to respond to your initial questions but my experience with psychedelic fungi has so radically transcended the boundaries that were available for selection that doing so could potentially be dishonest and misleading. Regardless - I wish you all the best. Take care!

That's the trade-off when doing surveys. You don't know who will answer exactly so the questions need to be broad enough to apply to the people who you think will answer it. Do you have any suggestions for "reasons" why people using very high dose are doing it?

re:OP Good luck with earning your degree (I'm serious). But I earned mine years ago (in a different discipline). I come here to forget about details (which is what I gotta do at work) and just hang out with like-minded people. After a 10 hour+ shift you are asking too much of me!
To make things simple for everyone, I do shrooms because under the influence I feel closer to home; as if 'normal' consciousness is a lie and shroomworld is closer to 'actuality' as opposed to consensus 'reality', if that makes sense to you. Hope this helps and good luck with your studies.

Apologies I'm a too used to using technical terms. It's not me trying to be smart, honestly. It's just how I've been trained to write.

Definitions: quantitative data = information in number form. Qualitative is essentially information in words.
Translation: I'm trying to ask questions I can measure with numbers so that I can identify trends in how people respond, using math. This is mostly to provide background information for later interviews with a smaller group of people, drawn from those who answer the survey. This way I can be more confident that the people I interview are representative of the larger community of psychedelic users.

jarjar...U just cracked me up! In your defense Cosmic, I know what you mean about using the language you are used to whatevs etc. My sister always tells me to shut the F up at certain gatherings because what I do at work is routine to me but disturbing to others (before this covid-19 thing I was fitting cancer survivors with col/ileostomy bags).
Anywho... If you really want to explore this topic you will never learn squat unless you ingest the substance yourself. I rub shoulders with psychologists now and again at my job and the ones who claim to know shit about p'delics because they have gathered all the available data written it about are the ones who have never imbibede the p'delic themselves. The ones who have personally explored these substances remain quiet and for good reason. Why? Because after 4-8 years of school and thousands of buckaronies $$$ you don't want to throw your carreer away for a principle. Even if it is a righteous principle. But I'm sure you are aware of that.
Eat the stuff. Be careful, don't be stupid, but eat the stuff!

IME it has to do with that high doses enable modalities of consciousness that are extremely difficult to obtain any other way.

Psychedelics feel good. But so does heroin. If it was a pursuit of pleasure there are others things that are better at it. But it's not for simple pleasure.
I think curiosity is the driving force for me. I got into psychedelics because of a yearning of being someplace familiar. I found that behind 5g of mushrooms. And now I want to experience the bizarre. And I know 1 or two more trips will never be enough but I'm thankful that I stumbled across this experience. I have felt as if I was on a pedestal and as if I was being crushed by the weight of the universe like a roach. I definitely want to continue to explore. These things have hurt me in the past but I believe it's part of the territory.
