I’m more lost than I have ever been here ... 1

Hey everyone ! It’s day 11 on my GT’s and was wondering on a couple things. The spores I used were from a syringe that are about a year and a half old ( they were refrigerated during that time ) . I know that people have had success with syringes that are 4-5 years old even . I was curious if the them being a little older may causing stalling ? I have an unmodified monotub going under GordoTEK. I will attach photos . The tub was colonizing between 78-81 degrees and now has been moved to 70 degrees. I’m surely being impatient but was wondering what you guys thought and maybe when to expect some pinning ? For the FAE I have spacers under the lid and making sure there is always a little bit of condensation on the sides . This tub has been moved into fruiting conditions . I appreciate you all !

I am observing hyphal knots I'd say another four days max till you got a forest to chop down.

That’s 11 days after I took the fully colonized grain spawn and was put into coco/vermiculite substrate .

I usually get pinning around day 20 and don't really even check for pins until after second week because I've never had pinning just 2 weeks after spawn (well maybe once or twice but besides the point) so don't panic if you don't see fruits for another week

For me it's really hard to see what's going on on the surface cause the photo is from far away. I like to take photos like this when I want to show the substrate surface. If you zoom in on the pics you will be able to see how the micro climate looks like. I'm offering this advice for any new grower who wants to increase his/hers chances of getting much more accurate tips and advice gl

Ok I apologize for that ! I just took some closer photos of the surface . I was just hesitant to put my arm in their with my phone so I went heavy with some alcohol on my arms and phone haha

Certainly no need to apologize for anything dude, my options are to wildly speculate (which doesn't help you in any way) or to ask you for better pics so I can at least ground my speculations in something Also there's no need for alcohol after your spawn jars have finished colonizing, stick the phone as close to the substrates as you feel is necessary for a clear pic won't hurt anything unless you drop the phone lol

Don’t worry you won’t contaminate it when it’s this far along.
Average time for pins would probably be around 13 days for me.

Looks like it should be pinning any day now, you already have hyphal knots going on. Can't tell you exactly how close or how many days, but it's pretty damn close, with as much looking and checking you're doing (I did the same, and still do, I'm still a novice lol) you'll see your first pin soon, you won't miss it!

No need to stress altho it's probably the most critical time when it comes to the surface conditions Boy oh boy I wonder how clear future pics will be with the learned knowledge that extreme closeups are allowed (I'm horrible) Some called hyphal knots before it was even specified exactly how long ago the tub was spawned and with terrible view of surface conditions, hyphal knots are still being called and the pics are a bit clearer this time but knowing that your substrate is just 11 days old I'm kind of reluctant to say you have early pin formation at least until I can see clearly that fruits are forming on the sub which I haven't been able to positively see yet. Of course it still very likely could be knots I'm not denying they're there, kind of looks like it..

One thing that I think is lame is when a concerned grower has a genuine question and needs someone to point him in the right directions and then he gets 3 pointless answers from 3 growers that all basically say the same pointless thing like: "definitely looks like mold to me, but then again could also be that everything is perfect and you'll get lots of mushrooms soon." meaning "I have no clue what I'm talking about, please stand by for a formed opinion Instead of me just speculating wildly"

Just looked . It’s so hard to tell. I got in close and kinda couldn’t find where that photo was . It does look like a piñata from that angle but not sure ... that grain used is white millet and I noticed that the tops of the millet would get a little darker color ( maybe dude to oxidation ? )

Everything is looking good. Really drying out is what tends to slows spores down. Once hydrated they come back quick. You're beyond that point though, so you have nothing to worry about in that regard.

Everything in your post is looking awful. Really offering nonsensical advice is what tends to slow the process down. Once experience is gained usefulness of advice tends to come back quick. You're beyond that point tho, so you have nothing to worry about in that regard.

Noice
Maybe it’s because I started with agar, but I just finished up my 3rd cube grow and 11 days from spawning is the longest I had to wait for pins. And that’s at a 1:4, probably closer to 1:5, spawn:bulk ratio. Good to know there’s no reason to worry if my next one takes longer.
Congratulations! You’ll have more than you can eat in a few days.

67 is great, they'll appreciate it between 65-72... much lower they slow down, much higher and bacteria becomes more likely... if they're extremely slow at this temp, you might be bacterial already... watch moisture content on grain prep, thus is typically where the problem starts, and my suggestion for 1st adjustments... temp is fine

Good job on creating those surface conditions I actually saw dozins of these pins on your sub yesterday, tho at the time when I circled in that handful of fruits I hoped they were pins but I wasn't sure at all.

Update as of this afternoon. I’m not sure what came over me last night but I did give a very light mist and fan . I have read so many things on misting and fanning and people seem very split on the practice . I’m not sure if it helped at all . I have not been misting of fanning but for whatever reason I did last night .

Dont get too hung up on maintaining surface moisture: bare in mind that evaporation is a key component in even pinset, if you're obsessively maintaining this look, you're not allowing evaporation to take place... that said, it's a balance, an ebb and flow within parameters... I have had boxes (I set and forget: no misting, no active air exchange) that never develop this level of surface moisture and still produce canopies... in contrast, overly obsessiveness can, IME/O, stall pinning all together

Clone a pin
I would be tempted to grab one of those fat pins with flamed tweezers and place It In the middle of a agar dish. They're very aggressive and fast growers when they're that small. Also you may get lucky and It'll be free of any contaminates..

I dont suggest cloning pins from substrates, only from agar... no way of knowing what you're taking... inversely,I suggest taking the largest, fastest finishing fruit from a cluster of fruit (a cluster is several fruit originating from the same hyphal construct)... agar pin clones USUALLY perform well bc they're fruiting in less than ideal conditions (ie limited gas exchange and evaporation)

As of now I am not going to mist and fan . The lid to the monotub has spacers between then for the FAE and I’m just waiting patiently. It’s currently at 69.6 degrees and on a 12 off 12 on light cycle . As you can see in the photos there are just little droplets of moisture ( no puddles ) . I’m so curious to when first harvest will be . I’m definitely still in the nervous realm of the grow . It’s so wild

Interesting Information Cap. I never thought about the lack of fae. I'll have to give It a try next time I have a cluster growing In agar..
When I pull pins out of substrate I do select the strongest looking clusters growing out of the top of the tub. I also like getting them when they're just a few hours old.
Each clone will end up being grown in a large .5 grow bag. If I end up with 12 clones I'll have 12 bags growing. All bags will produce. Out of twelve bags I might end up with one or two stellar producers.
There's many ways to get to the same spot. I do enjoy my method. Pin are such fast growers they out run the contaminates for ease of separating the good from the bad..

Some updates ! They seemed a little busy last night . I’m wondering about the middle of my surface . It’s a bit uneven in some spots but there is no pinning at all . I think this maybe a patience thing again . Today marks 2 weeks from putting the substrate and grain spawn into the monotub.

This was the first harvest . Not sure if anyone is into this thread anymore ahaha . I was a little bummed to get to them as late as I did but the absolutely blew up . It was like a full blown magical explosion . So the caps flipped a bit but I think I may have been timely enough that the block didn’t get damaged too badly . Only time will tell

You've done it. It only gets better and easier from here... Aside from all the really hard lessons that come from getting too confident later in the future.

Thanks so much ! Question regarding the second flush . When does the second flush begin ? I didn’t remover smaller pins while harvesting . I’m I looking at another all out of nowhere growth like the first flush ? I dunked the block back in cold water and held it under for about 5 minutes . It felt like it wanted to rupture while I had it held down so I backed off .

I let mine float in water for about an hour after the first flush. No need to hold the block underwater. I've also had great second flushes without dunking, also.

Looks alright, maybe could’ve cut a little closer on a few but really the only difference is you’d have .1 more dried stem lol.
The little ones in the second pic I would’ve pulled, they’ve got the look like they won’t do much. It’s good to leave them on now so you get a feel for what to leave in the future.

I soaked my substrate in water a couple of time after the first flush. The sub turned green and I never have done It since.
It's a preference thing. It works for some I guess, but not me..
I'm Into letting It run It's coarse. I do like pouring water down the side of the tub just to keep the sides and the bottom wet after the sub has shrunk from the sides.
It look like your going to be happy with the second flush...
Hey... Did you make any spore prints? This Is the time to learn that process.
Good luck and keep the pics. coming..

Ive never added water to any tub other than hydrating the coir initially. I also give zero shits about any flush after 2

I didn’t make a print . I will with the second flush . The syringe I used was about full with year old spores . Couldn’t there potentially be potency lose with the spores in the syringe being over a year old ?

I always make new prints. I never mess around with spore syringes.
It's always best to work with fresh spores. I store them In the fridge In vacuum bags.
It shouldn't effect potency If Spores are old.

Hey I have a question regarding veils breaking and and selective harvesting . In this photo you will see the right half of the tub that are still growing but just a little slower . There has been a good amount of veil breaks in the other side that’s not in the photo and that’s what worries me is the spores dropping and stunting the block . Some caps are flipping up a bit but I’m wondering if I can wait until later to harvest ? Thanks !

You can wait but I’d just grab the ones that are done before spores drop.

You'll have a nicer looking product If you harvest before the caps open fully.

Is it acceptable to cut the stem just a bit down from the cap or can you just pick the cap off that have fully opened while you are waiting for the others ?

Cutting the cap off is fine, that’s the go to move when part of a cluster finishes way before the rest and you can’t pick it without hurting the rest.

Hey quick question . I have never dealt with this kind of mycelial coverage . It’s very pillowy and covered pretty quickly but has some discoloration . It doesn’t smell sweet , it smells normal . With this coverage I put this tub into fruiting conditions . There was a different millet used . I’m just so curious on this very pillowy dense mycelium so if anyone has any info it’s greatly appreciated.

Looks like a reaction to something, possibly heat stress, bacteria, or a white mold lurking. Would need more information to make a better diagnosis.

Inoculation methods, spawn prep, fruiting temps would be a start. Any pics of those items would be good too.

Inoculation is done under a tub with holes cut out or hand . I must a little bit of water to get bacteria in the makeshift hood to fall . Then in inoculate with a syringe , flame the syringe and let cool. My spawn is coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum . That’s pretty straight forward I just mix that with boiling water in a 5 gallon bucket and let cool overnight . Fruiting temp is in the mid 70s , at night it’s around 73 and can go up to 78 .

It’s a little disjointed but from what I can determine is your using syringes to inoculate grain. That right there is a sketchy practice. What kind of grain are you using? How long are you sterilizing it for? If you’re doing spores to premade grain bags bought on line that’s a retarded way to try and grow. If that’s the method you might as well just order another one and roll the dice again. Might get 7 or you might crap out.
