Hello all. What would you say is the best and/or minimum size flow hood filter for being able to work with myco bags? I assume height is the main dimension affecting this.
Cheers and thanks

2 x 2 is what I used for a long time. Then I switched over to using an FFU (fan filter unit) They are prebuilt and ready to go and cheaper than building one. if you buy it right. They have a couple on HGR right now but they are ridiculous on shipping but maybe you are close enough to drive and pick it up...

if you don't use the link Look under clean room and look for what is in the pic it is 2' x 4' in size you can find them smaller at 2' x 2' if that is what you want you can also find them on ebay...

Thanks for the reply. I have never heard of the things you just sent me. I am extremely intrigued though and my mind is a little bit blown. Do you for sure get laminar flow out of it? I could read 700 something CFM on a label picture and this seems a bit low for the 800 CFM that I think is ideal for laminar flow on a 2X4 sized filter surface area. Also, are these new and just surplus or are they used?

It is a little bit low but it does the job many people use them Myers mushrooms actually sells them on his site but he asks $600 for them. I bought two of these brand new still in the plastic from HGR and have not had a problem I paid $70 each and picked them up myself I lived in Cleveland Ohio at the time. I don't buy from HGR until I see it says last chance at that point it is as low as they will go on the unit. The ones I sent you say marked down when it says last chance that is when I buy.

Many people use them. I just helped a person buy from HGR he bought a 2x2 though and I have not heard him complain about it. I will send you his name and you can contact him and see what he says about it. If I can find his name I talk to a lot of people on here.

As you can see these cost $1200 -1400 new.

I must also attest to the wonders of the mighty FFU! I recently purchased 2 MORE of some. 2x4 units can be had from $70 to $600 bucks. Condition matters also, the main filters can last 5 years of solid use so majority of the used ones are actually in great shape! I got the latest duo for a wall of sterile air. At little more than 200 a piece, back ups can be purchased. As they often come in multiples.
Also. Just for reference here I am going to quote a well known source writing about the ffu as a flow hood.
Quote- Can be operated both horizontally and vertically, making it ideal for everything from permanent installation to spot filtration. This unit can also function as a quiet and effective laminar flow hood for the laboratory environment. (Due to its relatively low air velocity [approximately 100 feet per minute], this unit should be used as a laminar flow hood in environments where there is already sufficient air filtration or treatment for general laboratory use; it is not suitable for this purpose in areas with a high airborne particle count.)
