Cordyceps grow
They have been in fruiting conditions for a couple of days and have started to orange up nicely.  My first time with these

This one is coming out to be the best looking of this culture, any tips on cloning it?

Cordyceps are just a different kind of fungus that are parasitic and grow from bug pupae. I don't think mine are going to fruit, they have been in fruiting conditions for 14 days without much change in the last 7 days or so.

Remember that unless for some odd reason you actually started from spore, you are already working from a proven culture and cloning a fruit would be entirely pointless.

Right on, I guess I was kinda thinking along the lines of isolating specific characteristics in cubes when you clone from large clusters or such.  So are the differences in appearance in cultures caused by slight variations in fruiting environments? I have a few different cultures going in the pics, but one is more variable in its appearance.

The differences in appearance among the same culture?  Mostly yeah, just little variations in environment I imagine.  You could clone from a fruit but you'll just end up with the exact same culture you started with, with it's little variations.  Totally something you wanna do though if you're working from a multispore grow though, like you would with cubes.

Reishi is a cool one to watch what it does in response to it's environment.  I worked with the same culture a LOT back when I grew them, and it was amazing how many different things it would do.  Start comparing with a different culture and even more differences show up!

I'm currently growing curtisii, lucidum, sessile, and one identified just as red reishi from the vendor. The red reishi seems like it varies more in its appearance in different blocks.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Ah, see now you're talking completely different species not just different strains/cultures of the same mushroom.  Semantics get confusing

Pics aren't the greatest shooting through the plastic, but some of my cordyceps have started to fruit.  Changed a few things in my grow area and they have seamed to respond to the changes.  Too bad I didn't figure it out before I messed up the majority of my grow.  But now I know for the next batches.

More cordy pics on one of my best tubs

Some reishi I harvested today, some were covered in a layer of spores, seams like when that happens they lose some of the shellac coating look.

Wow, they look wonderful!! Yellow Reishi? I remember my grandmother grew similar mushrooms when I was growing up. It's very nostalgic. I never asked her about it. I didn't like mushrooms back then.  Would you mind sharing your spawn, substrate, grow process?

Mycroom- not yellow but red and sessile, grain spawn, sub is hardwood pellets and bran or pellets and soy hull pellets, fruited in a grow tent

Chemical spark- im kinda just stocking them up until I get a soxhlet extractor to go to town on the majority, but until then I have been doing a few hot water extractions in my crockpot

Forrester- thank you sir!! Do you think the spore load is contributing to the dull appearance?

Absolutely.  It's not that the shiny varnish is gone, it's just entirely covered in a mess of spore dust.  Not as pretty, but it's worth the spore mess to get those nice conks I think!

Confertable household temperature for reishi...thermostat currently set on 76deg.  68deg for cordyceps

Do you keep at the same temp throughout, or do you lower temp for pinning/fruiting? I am also curious what you do for spawn and substrate for cordyceps. I have been really hesitant to try it. Is it a lot more difficult? I hear some people use riced potatoes and other methods.

I generally keep temp the same when running spawn or fruiting for the reishi.....same goes for the cordyceps

Substrate for cordyceps is brown rice supplemented with a nutrient broth of  soy peptones, malt, gypsum,  rock dust, and a few other things I can't remember off top of my head.  If you can successfully produce and handle liquid cultures than you can most likely grow cordyceps as long as you don't burn them in direct sunlight like I did for a few of mine. ....lol Check out @terrestrialfungi on Instagram for details on broth and for cultures....its where I started and learned most of my technique

Thanks werdo. Good to know. I typically use liquid cultures, never had an issue. The substrate plus supplements sound fascinating. I will check it out.

I will just dry these out powder and capsulize them up.  I like to take cordyceps in the morning so that seams like the easiest way to do them on the go.

Extraction from 150g of cordyceps...used about 3.5L of vodka over multiple pulls at 90degs to help extract.  I then used a double boiler system to evap the vodka at 110deg with a fan blowing over the top. I figure most of the alcohol has evaporated out so I added some everclear to be a preservative and it dropped a bunch of glucans im guessing out of solution.  So I put back on double boiler to remove the everclear.  I would like my final solution to contain 150ml so 1ml contains 1g of cordyceps.  Thinking I might have to use vinegar to act as a preservative and to dilute to final quantitie as the alcohol didn't work.  If anyone has any other interesting ideas I would love to hear them.

1 gram per 1ml seems reeeeeeeal thick to me, not sure it's going to be possible.  Maybe for a simple, single chemical that's possible, but we're talking about an extract of multiple compounds with different solubilities here.  You might have to lower that.

Of course that's just speculation on my part though

I appreciate your speculation!!! That is my ideal concentration just for ease of dosage and not having to consume much tincture but im ok with having to dilute more.  I think I'm going to dilute with water instead of alcohol but I'm worried about the need for preservation so my tincture doesn't go bad.

Vinegar isn't a bad idea at all, I think if you could work vinegar as the water component, along with at least like 20% alcohol you'd be gold!

I ended up diluting to 300ml with water / 20%alcohol
Its got alot of foam on top from shaking and separates out after setting for a bit so I will just shake before dosing.  2ml per g of cordyceps

Thanks forrester...I have to say it taste ultra strong...eating a gram is a walk in the park compared to the flavor of the tincture

Harvested more reishi to make room for some shitake that are ready to fruit.  Got a bag full of spores from the bottom tub of the fc

Filled the tent up with shitake blocks and they are pinning pretty well.

Yeah they do...I now have a stain on the concrete slab on my back porch from washing out the tent before putting the shitakes in.
