Making Coir-BRF cakes (grow along) 4

Where I live vermiculite costs much more than Coco coir so I make BRF cakes with coir instead of verm. The procedure and ratios are the same as with regular PF Tek BRF cakes, The only difference is I mix the BRF with hydrated coir instead of hydrated verm. I 'roll' (coat) the cakes in a thin layer of coir instead of verm after cakes have finished hydrating after birth. That's all. Cakes are fruited inside The Water Tub.
The Coir/BRF mix looks like this inside newly prepped jars

Cake colonizing
Time for birth

Cakes inside the Water Tub can sit on top of lids, jars or cookie racks.

Cakes fruiting

Feel free to ask questions and to post updates on your own coir cakes here!

Cool. Can you still boil it like the normal of tek? I'd think so. How's the performance? Or did you never use verm?

I've done tons of regular PF Tek cakes, I've also experimented with oatmeal/verm cakes before and they also perform as well as regular PF Tek and these coir cakes

I can't even find vermiculite where I live anymore, so I had no choice but to substitute it for coir But anyway, I do like to experiment with substrates and fruiting setups. I got more recipes coming up. BRF is damn expensive too compared to other types of flour.

At this point I'd say that coir cakes work as good as verm cakes from just the first few that I have fruited thus far. I'm convinced this is a successful recipe and probably won't be buying vermiculite ever again for me personally nothing will motivate me to buy verm cause it's harder to get ahold of and costs more, so it's not even a consideration.

Actually, coir holds a lot of water. It seems like it would give better flushes with more water available. But, it should shrink more than verm cakes. That should be sweet for something like the chronic tek
Do you have a recipe?

Do you just shoot your cakes up with spore syringe or do you have a cleaned up culture?

Currently I have cakes made from LI, LC and Agar cultures. But I don't see why I wouldn't have high success rate with spores as well. There would be occasional lost cakes but the majority would work out just fine because cakes done correctly should be fairly to highly resistent to uncontrolled spreads of bacterial colonies.

Interesting that you use the same amount of water since coir absorbs like 5x its weight in water almos. So you are using just dry coir from a brick?

I hydrate 650g coir with 3L water and that's the coir that I use for the BRF mix.

Interesting! Marking this one, just in case Shoeboxes turn out to be too hard and I have to drop back to cakes.

For these. I guess you hydrate the coir and mix 2:1 with brf?

But to be fair, it's not the same as regular pf tek. Way more water. I was pretty much wondering if you used extra water to account for the brf taking moisture

Oooh this is great! I'm going to run out of verm fairly soon, but I still have a massive stash of coir. Thanks for this!

It isn't really alot more moisture if you think about it. Because the coir is hydrated and enlarged it almost seems like it is alot more bRF, because the water is already in before you measure your ingredients. So 2 verm dry to 2 hydrated coir probably means less non nutrious substrate and more nutrient rich BRF because your doing 2 cups to 1 cup.
I hope that makes sense.
I guess another way of looking at it is bring a shit load of Vermiculite to field capacity and then measure 2 cups to 1 cup of BRF. But measure how much water you made field capacity with the Vermiculite I bet it is less than 1 cup.
