Was out looking for some subs and found these growing in a clump from an old pine tree stump not too far from a river. Have never found any gyms before and don't know much about them apart from some limited reading.
Are these gyms or something else?? Appreciate the help 😁

Thanks 😁 they seem to be ticking all the boxes?
Smells sweet and initial spore print looking rusty orange.
If they are indeed gyms I'm trying to find some information on drying/storage techniques. I've heard they don't dry well and that you can freeze them fresh?
Do you wouldn't have any knowledge in this area or sources, much appreciated.

Dry them and store them all you want, they're not active nor edible. If you want actives you should look for psilocybe subaeruginosa.

From the second link you gave:
"One striking finding is that Gymnopilus junonius does not occur in North America, and is not psychoactive. It occurs in Europe, Australia and South America, solving the mystery of why European big laughing gyms consistently fail to cause laughter."

Yeh I found it confusing though as the next paragraph quotes
The mushrooms we have been calling Gymnopilus junonius in eastern North America fall into four species - the previously described Gymnopilus subspectabilis and G. luteus, and the newly named Gymnopilus voitkii and Gymnopilus speciosissimus. Only G. speciosissimus is mentioned as staining green in the paper, but some or all of the others definitely also contain psilocybin. The species can be difficult to tell apart macroscopically, but are easy to separate with a microscope or via DNA sequencing.
Some or all of the species contain psilocybin.. Many reports of people getting a good trip from them on the net. Hmmmmm

What you quoted just says that what was called junonius in eastern N.America was actually four different species, all active. Actual junonius is not however.

There's other psychedelic alkaloids found in gyms of the spectabilis-imperialis clade, but wether they occur in g.junionis or other species without psilocybin, I do not know. Quantities may be too low for any practical purposes. Never heard of active junionus from Australia either.
