What do you do with leftover colonized jars?
    #26741965 - 06/13/20 02:42 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I have sometimes leftover jars, now 2 single ones with different varieties.
They have already begun to fruit. What do you typically do with these jars?
It kind of hurts to scrap them.:frown:

You could always put in the fridge before they fruit I think. I dont have leftover jars yet. Maybe some day although I doubt it

Shoe box yo! Assuming you're talking about qt jars.

About 100g dry coir to a handful of vermiculite, unknown amount of water to field capacity.

I spawned 7 shoes boxes the other day and started with 700g coir and like 3 qt verm, 3.5 qts of water which was a little too much. Anyway that ended up being the perfect amount of bulk sub for my 7 qts, spawning at a ratio of 1:1.5 and using that extra .5 as a top layer.

This is a good read about shoe boxes - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662

This is what I would do:
1) expand them into new jars - gtg,
2) spawn into a small tray/SB and fruit,
3) put in fridge (after consolidation) until you figure out what to do with them (one of the above or combine with other jars).

No jar is a waste! :mushdance:

You could even just top-fruit them if you had to. Just pop a sandwich bag over the top- maybe cut a couple little holes in it if needed

Find a cool container and do a novelty grow. I have a couple of rad glass terrariums that I usually save a little bit of spawn for.

I just read today that grains by themselves fruit very badly. I would just shoebox them too.

It produces a whole lot more fruit than scrapping it does

Leftover jars are like leftover crack.

“Man everybody knows ain’t no such thing as leftover crack!”

Now I’m gonna have to listen to them.

Ha, you guys are great. I always found it a pain in the ass to do grain to grain inoculation, since it was hard to break up the mycelium in the jar by shaking. Then trying to get it out of the jar in a sterile fashion proved difficult. Most of my g2g jars ended up contaminated.
I'll give it a try still.

Well it’s not Shaking the jar so much as Beating it against the palm of your hand  I’ve heard people use tires to bang it against too. Phone book. I like my hand though, never really hard just small repeated shocks.

When you’re spawning it’s ok to let some of the broken up grain out then put the lid back on and beat the rest loose if the jar is too full. I guess you could do the same with g2g if you had to.

When you do g2g just make sure both lids are loose (master and receiver) then, holding master jar with left hand I take the lid off with my right and then with the same hand I take the lid off the receiver and spill a little grain in then I keep the master kinda tilted as I get the lid somewhat settled on the receiver. Then lid on the master and turn a little, then fully close the receiver. Repeat with the next receiver. I keep the lids separated in my right hand so that the inside of the master lid isn’t touching top side of the receiver lid.

It helps to have a sufficiently tall SAB or else

You can g2g a little before full colonization to make it easier to break up the grain.

I’ve had a couple times where I’d go to pour the grain to another jar and a big chunk came out and clogged the receiving jar and grain went all over lol.

It takes a little trial and error but you’ll get it. My first couple g2g weren’t great either.

I’m way more careful and clean up everything before doing it, but for plates I don’t really take any precautions anymore.

Usually I unscrew the receiving jars and pop the lid loose but leave it on, do the same with the colonized jar, then let the air settle for a minute before actually pouring it. And don’t bump the sab!

Wait... no on uses a spoon? I haven't done G2G but I imagined everyone using a spoon that is flame sterilized, opening the jar quickly scooping some grains with spoon and then into the next jar. Boom finished.

In a super short SAB that’d be perfect but it’s just faster to shake the jar up if you’re doing a bunch.

Especially once the jar gets lower and you gotta dig the spoon in there. Plus it’s another thing to hold.

I’ve done it a couple times though.

If a cube jar is a be-otch to break up as, in you have to beat it like it owes ya money; then it is most likely bacterial and I personally wouldn't recommend G2G.

If it's healthy yeah G2G.

Like said above be creative, top fruit by throwing some coir on top then a baggie(great for bacterial jars because they get less exposure to the flying spores in the air from not mixing in sub and ya get some fruits rather than instant :gumby:), and like said above do some novelty grows, experiment. Walking off the path is the best way for new discovery's, just don/t get lost on it. :awesomenod:

I personally cry when I loose coir to sneaky contams over grains mainly because coirs a bit more spendy for me. I often just top fruit or throw out to save on the time and heartache.

Novelty

Top fruit

I noc up new dishes with leftover colonized grain..(oats)

If the grain appears to look free of contaminates They work great.

A Flamed tweezers are a fast way to go..

A colonize oat grain.

I do! Spray the spoon with ISO and flame works every time for me. Contam free. With gloves on and in a SAB of course.

When spawning right?  Not g2g?  I don't see that turning out well.
